Wantagh or Bellmore????
Wantagh is smaller. Bellmore has 2 school districts for elementary - Bellmore and North Bellmore. Middle School and High School are part of Bellmore-Merrick CHSD.
ETA: Bellmore SD is on the Princeton Plan - One school for K-2, one for 3-4, one for 5-6. North Bellmore has 5 elementary schools that is split geographically.

Every single school district is going to have positives and negatives.

Wantagh or Bellmore????
I would choose Wantagh over Mepham 1000%. I would weigh Wantagh and JFK schools (south bellmore) in a close comparison. I really wanted Wantagh but ended up in Seaford.

I'm not sure I'd agree with this. JMO.

I should say I grew up in Wantagh, attended Wantagh Schools (beech st. elem, Wantagh High etc) when they became blue ribbon. I REALLY wanted my kids to go there. Most of my friends are teachers there and have nothing bad to say. I have nothing bad to say about Mepham but IMO I would choose Wantagh if given the choice.

I'd choose Wantagh. I believe Bellmore has Mepham or JFK as High Schools depending on where in Bellmore you live.

Re: Wantagh or Bellmore????
I live in North Bellmore and most of the moms I am close with say, as it stands right now, they will not be sending their kids to Mepham (they will be paying for private or catholic HS). We are always keeping our eyes open for buying a home and I no longer look at homes zoned for Mepham. My daughter is only in second grade, but you blink and it will be here.

Wantagh or Bellmore????
I have a close family member who works for Bellmore-Merrick in each of the schools. We also went to school in the district. She said JFK and Mepham are comparable but if she had children, she'd send them to Mepham.

Let me know if you need any help with your search or have questions about the area... I live in N. Bellmore, but I am very familiar with Wantagh and the particular neighbhorhoods and homes available there. I grew up in the area in Seaford, and my sister lives in Wantagh Woods. My son goes to preschool in that area, too! It's really a great area to live. Holiday Park is also a nice area, especially if you like the split level style home.
As a realtor, I cannot comment about school districts. But taking off my realtor hat and putting on my parent hat:
I honestly don't think that there is a huge difference between any of the school districts in the Merrick to Massapequa area on the south shore. I highly value education, as does my husband. Schools were a factor for me and my husband, and we bought while I was pregnant with the idea we'd want to send our child to public school. We looked at homes anywhere from Merrick to Massapequa, and I would have happily bought a home in any of those school districts. We happen to find a house we loved in N. Bellmore, so our son (who is now 4) will go to N. Bellmore public schools and then onto Grand Ave and Mepham High. There might be slight differences between Wantagh and Bellmore or Wantagh and N. Bellmore (maybe one school district is stronger in one area than another), but I consider them quite comparable.
It's also my personal belief that a lot of what a child gets out of a school experience is what that child and his/her parents put into it. The school is important to provide the resources and opportunity to succeed, but I don't think anyone would be at a disadvantage in either of the school districts you are considering.
I am surprised to hear a N. Bellmore mom say that she wouldn't send her child to Mepham, and that it's a widespread sentiment in N. Bellmore. I've never really heard anything bad about the school, but my child isn't yet in public schools. I know a lot of people specifically want to look in N. Bellmore because of the schools, and most people in my neighbhorhood send their children to public school. But it's definitely interesting to hear another view.
Bottom line - it's is hard to generalize about what's a "better" school, because it really depends on the criteria you are looking at -- academics? athletics? special programs? class size? Everyone has different criteria and weighs them differently.
One thing you may be interested to know, though, is that Wantagh, while having an excellent reputation, does NOT have full day kindergarten. I think it's only one of 2 Nassau districts that still has a half day program. And the elementary class sizes in Wantagh are much larger than in N. Bellmore and Bellmore. A good friend of mine has a first grader and kindergartener in the Wantagh elementary school on Beech St., and the classes consisted of 30 and 31 kids. The class sizes in N. Bellmore are more like 17 or 18 kids per kindergarten class.

Re: Wantagh or Bellmore????
DH & I graduated from Wantagh and decided to buy in district so our kids would go here too. There are a lot of Wantagh alums that are parents in the district now, it's kind of funny, like a mini reunion every day.

The Wantagh BOE is going to be discussing full day K for the 2013/2014 year at the board meeting this week.
Depending on which elementary school in Wantagh the class sizes vary. Wantagh El (on Beech St.) houses the inclusion classes which tend to be larger. The gen ed classes are not allowed to be that large in the elementary schools in Wantagh SD. My kids are in a different school in the district and the first grade classes are 21 kids each and 2nd grade 24 each. The upper grades in our school all have sections of approx. 18 students each.

Yes, thank you for clarifying! I should have said that the 30+ classes that I was referring to were inclusion classes.
Also, I really appreciate this kind of response to posts about schools because - (i) it's great info to have as a realtor!, and (ii) it is definitely more productive to share this kind of factual information to substantiate viewpoints on different schools than just offering blanket statements on what's good and bad.
