Want to try solids with DS today, but have a question?

I have already tried both Rice and Oatmeal with DS. He got very constipated with Rice but did ok with Oatmeal. He is sometimes interested and will eat and other times he could care less. I bought baby food jars yesterday and would like to try one of them. I haven't given any cereal in a few days. Do you think it is alright to just try Sweet Potatoes or Pears today? DS is just about 5 months.

Also, any suggestions with keeping his hands out of his mouth while I'm feeding him. It seems as soon as the food goes in his mouth he shoves his fist in and gets food everywhere.

My DD has been on solids for a few weeks now, so I am by no means an expert, but I have found that she likes the fruits mixed in the cereal best -- it takes away the tartness i guess. Also, the reason why he puts his hands in his mouth is that he is exploring the food ad getting to understand it by feeling it. I hold her hands when I am putting the food in, and let her her put her hands in her mouth as much as she wants. She hasn't been doing it as much lately, so I guess she has figured it out! I have not started veggies yet, so I have no idea how to go about those -- mixed in cereal or alone?

I think it is fine to start a stage one fruit of veggie @ 5 months. I agree with the PP who said to mix some into the cereal.

I think it's perfectly fine. Chloe likes her fruit and veggie mixed into cereal. I give her oatmeal and a fruit in the morn. and veggie and multi-grain at night.

Right now we just give Abby a veggie at night with her oatmeal. Today -Wed she will have her last veggie and then I will try the fruits...Then I will begin giving her a fruit in the AM and a veggie in the PM...I am not sure when I am going to begin 3 meals a day, I guess around 6 months???

Abby is 5 months now...we started veggies at 4 months with rice cereal first and then oatmeal.

I agree with the above posters. My ds does better with oatmeal. I also buy the oatmeal cereal that has mixed fruit in it.

Sweet potatoes is great to start with. my dr recommends doing 3 days in a row of it to make sure they are not allergic.
Then maybe try a fruit like apples or pears.

we started DD on veggies 1 week after we started cereal. And she LOVES sweet potatoes!! I think it's perfectly fine to start!
