Want to share my epiphany about work stress and a bad boss.

I have some problems at work. I have a job in technology. In the middle of December by boss took me out for lunch and wanted to, sorta, talk about my future.

He knew I was moving and it would be a longer commute. He basically told me his budget is 600k this year for the department and that my salary was a problem for his budget.

Yup. A boss actually said that.

I was given some options. One of them was everything stays the same. One of them was leave the compny, but only work when they had a job. He didn't say it in that way, but I finally figured out what he meant.

He is a good guy actually. Family man, he is a good guy.

But the budget looming over his head means he WILLloose his job in June if he isn't bringing business in.

And so he became a major a-hole about everything. Micro managing. Telling me how and when to speak to clients. Telling me what I should say, how I should say it.

I HATE being micromanaged. And he has turned into an u
UBERa-hole.

It is makg me sick. I'm at the break g point suitm him.

So what did I do?

I decided to not allow him to bother me Anymore. Friday and today he keeps telling me I have to prepare for a simple meeting tomorrow. The first time he badgered me I said "I'm an expert at this, I will make sure I know it, but I'm not going to become more of an expert between now and tuesday. "

So maybe this is t the right answer for everyone. But. Wanted to share that this choice has changed me. I don't feel bad. I shave more energy. I'm not worrying. I'm happy.

Let him be a jerk and I'm just goi g to go along with it for now. I'm gonna nod my head, for now. I'm gojng to let it go, for now.

But my BIG boss is goig to get an earful soon. And we will fix it together. And if I loose my job, so be it.

But I can't live with this stress anymore. I can't let it permeate my home life, and make me sick.

I posted a response to a similar thread on the career board this morning.

I think A LOT of people are in the same boat, feeling like they need to make their job their whole lives out of fear of losing it.

Bottom line though, we can only do what we can do.

If you (or anyone!) gets let go, perhaps that is not necessarily a bad thing and may in fact open up doors to even better opportunities.

We are definitely feeling it in human services right now, especially with these changes coming along on a state level with how agencies will be getting paid. Many social workers/case managers jobs are at risk. Still, we are expected to continue to jump through hoops for our clients as resources continue to shrink and shrink and shrink and problems become more complex.

I didn't realize there was a carrer board (which means someone is going to report this post)

But thanks for the comment. I think we all can just benefit from letting the hurt go.

My boss is awful. micromanaging to the hilt, and just plain mean. She constantly says if people do not like what she does they can quit, everyone is replaceable. Which is true, but how demoralizing to hear this from your boss? The only people above her are the Board, so there really s no one to take this to (the Board is a mean spirited bunch, they would approve).

So I am looking for work, but there isn't much out there. I have decided to avoid her like the plague, and ask no questions unless I really have to ask and make any other little changes that make this bearable.

I wish I had better advice, but make your situation as bearable as possible, and look for new work if that is not possible. I think a lot of employers are treating people like crap since the economy is bad.
