Wall to wall carpet question
Home Depot just came to measure for carpet and called with our quote The room measured 311 sq feet yet they say we need 390 sq feet of carpet. Does that sound normal? It seems like a lot of extra carpet.

It's roughly 20% extra. Depends on the shape of the room and what they need to do as far as seams. Also if the carpet has a pattern.

Re: Wall to wall carpet question
Might be because of seaming. The pieces have to run in the same direction.

Depending on the carpet you picked, it comes in 12 or 15 foot rolls. You are paying per linear yard. You will have extra to save.

Re: Wall to wall carpet question
You have to add 10-20% extra (depending if there is a pattern) for cuts and waste. Also, Home Depot contractors lay out your carpet so that the seams are in the least obtrusive place (along a wall where a bed and 2 nightstands are, under a couch and end tables, and so on,). They try to avoid seams in the middle of the room or where major walking patterns are . Also, carpets come in 12' (very few HD carpets come in 15' rolls) .. so you are buying the entire 12' length. If your room is 14x25, they are going to cut a 12x25 and a 12x2, which is where the 10-20% extra comes in.
So depending on the type of carpet and where the seams lay, that sounds about right.
