Visiting the city with kids- where should we go?

My almost 7 year old wants to visit the empire state building.. I have a 7,5, &2 year olds - any suggestion on what else we can do around that area? I clueless about the city - can we walk to central park? We would prefer not to take a taxi anywhere but if we have to...

We have taken DS to Central Park, he loves it there. We have also done a day downtown, and done Battery Park. That was also a fun day. He is 2, we haven't done midtown with him yet but I think we are going to try this summer!

Would you be willing to take the subway? We just went to the Intrepid. My 5 yr old son loved it. Also, Museum of Natural History is GREAT. In central park you can do the zoo and the amusement park (Victoria Gardens). If you are up that way you can also hit FAO Schwartz for the little ones.

You really couldn't walk from empire state building to central park. In the area of the empire state building you could go to the big toys r us. not sure what else you can do in midtown but empire state building, toys r us, and eat something might be enough.....

It would be alot of walking but you can do the Empire State Building, hit Times Square, do the Toys R Us, the M n M store, then head uptown even more to Central Park (there's a big carousel there), lots of playgrounds. If it's warm they open the sprinklers at some playgrounds. There's also the Central Park Zoo around 66th and 5th. I would def bring a stroller for the 2 year old. You might want to jump in a cab at some point though.
