Visiting DC at Daycare
What do you guys think of visiting your DC at daycare during your lunch break? Is it disruptive for them? Does it depend on the kid?
Thanks!

Visiting DC at Daycare
Def depends on the kid. If my child sees me, she would most likely cling to me and probably cry that she wants to come home with me BUT that's my child - every child is different, of course.

Visiting DC at Daycare
My son is very easy going (adjusted to nursery school instantly, and I can drop him off at random drop-off nurseries easily), but I know it would disrupt my son because no matter how happy he is somewhere, he'd 1000% rather be with mommy.
If I were to do it, it would probably go a lot easier if I explained in advance that I was going to be stopping by on a certain day, and I'd be very clear that I would then be leaving and he would be staying.
If I popped in as a surprise, he would get way too excited and then he would be absolutely devastated when I left. And every day thereafter he would be anxious and wondering all day if I would be showing up as a surprise that day.

I wouldn't be able to do it but, I know many at my center (in an office building) did it when their children were infants.

I think it depends on the DC. If it's in your office building, where parents are always coming to visit, that's one thing. But I would never go out of my way to visit during lunch. It disrupts the daily flow of the classroom and would probably make the child upset on the days you didn't visit.

I would not do it. My DS has been in daycare since 8 weeks and I know if I dropped in on him today even at 3.5 he will want to leave with me

Re: Visiting DC at Daycare
I don't think that would go over well with my kids and they both love their "school". They would want to leave with me and I'm sure would be sad when they couldn't.

Re: Visiting DC at Daycare
I personally think it's more disruptive than anything. I wouldn't do it. They have a routine there. Having parents come in and out while they are eating lunch, doing activities, etc., is probably not the best idea

I work less than a mile from dd's daycare but never visit. I think she would think it was time to go home and then when I leave she'd probably cry. I wish I could come and visit her...it would be so sweet. But also - I don't know if my daycare would like me to pop in a lot. I don't want to disrupt the flow of the class.

My dd would lose her mind when I left. If I'm there she expects to leave with me.

Re: Visiting DC at Daycare
DS started day care at 12 weeks. For the first month or so I would go visit at lunch a couple days a week. Then I stopped. As they start to understand and become more alert, I don't think it is fair to them to "tease" them. Now, at 2, if DS sees us, it is time to go home, it would be torture.

I think my boys would be ok but I would never do it because I could see the teachers getting annoyed- it disrupting the activities, other kids asking why their parents didn't visit, etc.

Thanks everyone. With him being so close to where I am working now I was thinking about it. I definitely wouldn't want to upset him and disrupt his routine.

Re: Visiting DC at Daycare
My kids aren't in daycare. My inlaws watch them in the morning and they go to a 1/2 day school. The few times I have had to leave work and take my son to a dr apt and try to drop him back off, that was a nightmare. Crying, screaming, etc.
Also, when their school has events parents can come to, when we went, it was a mess. My kids wanted to sit on my lap, wouldn't participate in the event, and when we tried to leave after they cried and we ultimately had to take them with us. The teachers politely suggested maybe we should reconsider when we come to events.

No way. When I show up it means she gets to go home. She would lose her mind if I tried to leave again.

Re: Visiting DC at Daycare
I think if you planned to do it everyday it might become part of your child's routine and they would learn your mid day visit was apart of his program. If it wasn't going to be a regular occurrence, I wouldn't.
I had contemplated this in the beginning. The school I chose for DD in the end has a strict policy no visitors unless you're planning to take them home with you at the end of the visit. The school feels these intermittent visits comfort the parent, and confuse a child. They do have "special person's day" every year where anyone in the child's life can come and play with them, but they dismiss with you at the end.

I do not stop by because it is to much of a distraction to the room and that is not fair to the teachers and other children. There have been times that I have picked my son up early and it definitely is a distraction.

Re: Visiting DC at Daycare
Totally depends!! Kiddo I watch at my home daycare used to have his mom come every day on her lunch break, but he was only a toddler then and did great with it. Had he cried a lot when she would leave I would have asked her not to anymore so as not to disrupt his day and make it more difficult for him. That wasn't the case. Another kid I watch is very sensitive. For a few weeks his mom was coming by everyday at 3:30 (he got picked up at 5:15) to drop off his sister and he'd get very upset about her leaving. That would never have worked out if she had been doing it more than just those few weeks. So definitely depends on your kiddo. If it were me, I'd definitely at least try it out. It's great to spend time with your kid during lunch, I always encouraged the first mom to do it - although of course only because he handled it well. Feel it out, you never know. If it's just upsetting to your child then definitely not worth continuing
