Verizon wireless - Edge plan vs. Standard 2 yr contract plan

Anyone have any info - pros and cons, of each plan? We currently have the regular contract plan. DH thought he needed a new phone (and is eligible for an upgrade), so he went to the store and spoke to them, but we didn't even know there was the Edge plan. Turns out he doesn't really need a new phone, but now we are wondering if we should switch. We have 4 phone lines and none of us are the type that have to have the newest, best phone out there, as soon as it comes out. We are all pretty ok with hanging onto our phones until the one we have dies or breaks.

Thanks

Verizon wireless - Edge plan vs. Standard 2 yr contract plan

I'm on my 2nd edge contract. After the issues I went through going from the first to the second, I probably won't do it again.

With the first, I had to get a replacement phone and got it through Apple, which is an authorized dealer. When it came time to return the phone as per the edge agreement, they kept rejecting the phone because it wasn't the original phone given to me and it wasn't an authorized replacement (except it was). I went back and forth for nearly 2 months, sending and resending the phone, getting charged the full retail price of the original phone, Verizon calling me and threatening to cancel my service for not paying the full amount, etc. It was such an ordeal. They finally looked through all the records I sent them (after the 5th phone call) and admitted it was a mistake on their end.

Forgot to add- If you don't want or need a new phone, edge is pretty much pointless.

Re: Verizon wireless - Edge plan vs. Standard 2 yr contract plan

I've had some problems with Verizon, not specifically related to the Edge plan, but as a result of the Edge plan.

We're about 7 mos into 2 of our 45 lines being on the Edge plan.

Benefits (as I was told) is you don't have a typical 2yr contract, and you can upgrade before the 2yr mark.

I was not told before hand, when you do the Edge, you will be charged tax on the FULL retail cost of the phone - that amount is on your 1st bill. Can be a little shocking if you don't know about it in advance.

I'm not thrilled with Verizon - been with them for 10 yrs and ever since switching to Edge, we've had billing issues - all b/c it was not explained correctly and we were given inaccurate information by two different Verizon reps - now Verizon won't do anything for us.

The people at the Verizon store truly have ZERO clue about how the Edge program works. I got a different answer and price quite from all FOUR people I spoke with.

Ultimately, we decided to go with the Edge plan and so far it's been ok. I'll revisit the details again the next time we upgrade our phones.

If you're not the type that needs newer/better I would stay with the standard contract. I admit I don't know much about edge but if being able to upgrade early is one of the perks than I don't see the point.
Personally I am so done with cell phones in general. My husband has prepaid and pays $25/month for the same thing that I pay $90/month for. When my contract is over I am going to be looking into this for myself.

Neither do the people at best buy. He kept telling me she would save me money but then the way he calculated it made no sense since he didn't account for the fact that there were a different number of payments than the regular plan. I can't remember exactly but we went with the regular plan. We're not the type to upgrade early though.

Under Edge - you pay for the full price of the phone but, you get a discount on your monthly service costs. With a two year contract - you get the phone for a discount but you pay more monthly. I think the Edge plan is a little more money overall but, it's great if you want the latest and greatest phone.

ETA - buying the Samsung Galaxy 6 under the Edge plan - the phone costs $599. You get a savings of $360 over the two years on your bill and you aren't paying the $200 for the phone upfront. Without taxes - there is a $39 difference between the two plans.

On Edge plan, you are paying for the phone as a fee monthly divided by the full cost for the 2 year term. To some its worth it as the price for the line itself may be the same or less (dependent on the phone). The first time you get into it, it may be worth it as you want a new phone and don't want to wait 1 or 2 years until you are to get a discount off the phone.

With edge, once you start paying down your phone, as a year or so, you may be able to get into a new edge phone however you have to still have to pay a certain percentage and you would have to give it back to them since you never finished paying for it. I believe this is how they make money but you get a phone and at the end of the day, that's all people care about.

Re: Verizon wireless - Edge plan vs. Standard 2 yr contract plan

I have an iphone 4 Chat Icon and received a text from Verizon the other day stating that I can receive a $200 bill credit if I upgrade to a 4g phone.

I called and spoke to a rep; $99 for iphone 5s, sign a 2 yr contract but no credit on the bill OR no contract and approx $21 per month for 24 month for the phone and receive a $200 credit on bill spread over 24 months. So basically a $3 saving on the bill for $24 and I would own the phone after the 24 month period. No other savings on the bill if I switch to Edge.

Yeah, no thank you.

One other reason why I most likely will not go back to edge is that they changed how much you need to pay. It used to be that you had to pay 50% of the retail price of the phone over 12 months. Now I believe they just changed it 75% over 24 months. No thanks.
