Re: Vegetarians come in!

November will mark my 19th year as a vegetarian Chat Icon No meat, fish, poultry. I stopped eating eggs long before I became a vegetarian and only just started eating them again this year. DH is also a vegetarian. I've had spurts of going vegan, but it's not something I can maintain in the long-run. I live a compassionate lifestyle - no leather, suede, fur (Chat Icon)...no skins of any kind. I don't use products tested on animals - and I have to say, in the almost-20 years that I've lived this way, there have been some great strides in vegetarian options in restaurants, fashion leaning toward a more cruelty-free way of things, and companies dumping the idea of testing on animals. There's a long way to go, but there have been MANY positive changes over the years. So Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to that! Chat Icon

And now, food. One of my most favorite topics in the world!

The best meal I ever ate was on our honeymoon, in Napa, at ubuntu I look at their menu from time to time - it changes often, depending on what's in season - for ideas to make at home.

I like Zen Palate and the Candle Cafe, both in Manhattan.

But when I'm feigning for some veggie-friendly junk food, I go to Foodswings in Brooklyn. It's vegan fast food...just look at the menu. SO GOOD FOR POST-DRINKING MUNCHIES.

Taco Bell is also a go-to for me when I just want junk food - just a heads-up though, if you avoid gelatin, then you don't want to order their sour cream. It contains it. My favorite thing there is the 7-layer burrito: rice, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, guac, cheese and (I order without it) sour cream.

I love, love, love to cook. My mom told me when I became a vegetarian that I had to learn to cook, because she ran a house, not a restaurant, and she would not be making special things for me each night. So I learned. And now it's become a complete hobby for me. The best vegetarian cookbook out there in my opinion is How to Cook Everything Vegetarian - it's just...amazing. I highly recommend picking it up.

Some of the things I cook that people seem to love are:
Spinach Pie
Homemade veggie burgers
Vegetable lasagna
Breads
Muffins - savory or sweet
Soups - I love soup, could eat it every single day, honestly. Love carrot-ginger, pea, or a spicy vegetable variety.
Homemade gnocci - takes a lot of time, so make a few batches and freeze if you ever attempt it.
Sauces
Really great grilled cheese...use interesting cheeses, add in pickles or sauteed mushrooms, hot peppers...mmm...

Getting so hungry now. Chat Icon

Re: Vegetarians come in!

so i havent eaten red meat in about 14 years and i havent eaten poultry in about 10 years. i still eat fish and eggs/milk.

my fast food choice is taco bell - crunchwrap supreme, mmmmm. also pizza is a good fast food choice, but i try to stick with whole wheat pizza and less cheese (but that's another story).

easy meals are veggie burgers. buy these from BJs and they are super easy to heat up when i dont feel like cooking.

often times i see myself leaning more towards pastas and starches, so i need to make a conscious effort to look at my diet and change things up. more salad, beans, eggs, soup. and keep the pasta intake to only a few.

Veg for 3 years now, thank you Skinny *****. Still eat fish (mostly what dh catches tho) and im starting to lean more towards vegan, less eggs/cheese milk etc. Someone said if i knew how cheese was made i'd never eat it. What info do you guys have about that?

Love taco bell and pizza, but now leaning away from pizza. Im big into falafel now. Made it in a whole wheat wrap with hummus lettuce and tomato last night yum!

I dont really cook so i pretty much stick to trader joe's veg patties and amy's burritos!

Re: Vegetarians come in!

vegan for 2 years until i found out i was preggo...doctor said i could stay vegan and i was planning on it, but i was worried that i wouldn't plan properly to get the extra protein and calcium for me AND baby, so for now i eat dairy once or twice a day. but i LOVE being vegetarian/vegan. i will go back to being a strict vegan after i finish breast feeding and i'm looking forward to it.

dh hated my going veg at first, but a year ago he saw how much better i was feeling and started asking questions and doing his own research, and now he's a vegetarian.

we have a few recipes we love, including a really yummy "chick'n" and dumplins (using gardein chick scallopini), a delicious "peppersteak" sandwich (using seitan), and a great bbq tofu. anyone want recipes just let me know...or if anyone has any great ones to share, we are always looking to try new things.

eating out, i love:
taco bell - mexican pizza, no meat (and no cheese, add guacamole for vegan)
burger king - they have a decent veggie burger but it has dairy in it.
pizza - if you're looking to avoid cheese, some places like frantonis have marinara slices w/o cheese.
chilis - one of my favs...ask for fajitas w veggies only, or they just came out w new veggie tacos on their specials menu.
california pizza kitchen also has a ton of veggie options and they are really yummy.

drive through is tough, i tend to stay away for the most part...

just found a new tasty sounding "beef" pot pie recipe, gonna try it this week. i'll let you know how it turns out. :)

happy to meet more veggie heads!
