Vegetarian Mommies
A few questions for a friend...
1. Did you become anemic or have to take supplements after delivery?
2. If you BF'd, what changes, if any, did you make to your diet?
3. Can you recommend any foods that would help increase iron and protein intake?
TIA!

1 - no, all my tests came back normal
2 - not much, actually everyone joked that my milk was SUPER HUMAN and many thought it was BECAUSE I'm a vegetarian. Alex thrived on my milk - she actually gained 1lb between coming home and her first doctor visit. The only thing is I avoided dairy products as well because she became more fussy when I ate them.
3 - Drink fortified soy milk everyday - I had at least 2 glasses. Eat lots of beans. DH made a lot of bean soups for me while I was BFing. Tofu and tofu products are great - tofu hot dogs, veggie burgers, fake chicken, etc. I was very conscious (and still am) of eating a portion of protein with lunch and dinner. If her baby can handle the dairy - she should eat as much dairy as possible - yogurt, cheese, etc...

Re: Vegetarian Mommies
I don't know if I was anemic after delivery, but I was given an iron pill at the hospital. I don't know if they do that for everyone or they did it for me b/c of veg.
A bfing diet was a challenge. My baby has a sensitivity to dairy, and as a veg, I eat a ton of dairy. So yeah, I had to change my diet and it was very hard . I stopped bfingn after 2 months , partly b/c of this. I wish I had been more prepared.
Iron foods- Green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale) and wheat grass juice is like one molecule away from blood- so its a good replacement.
