Vegas anyone?
AS you can see from my other posts, DH and I are not sure where we want to go. I also have never been to Vegas, nor has he and it would be nice to visit some family that live there. An Aunt has a time share there at the Cancun Resort which is off the strip, however only about 8 minutes from the strip. Get this, she told me she can get me her timeshare for only $50 per night! If we go for 5 days - that is pretty darn good. Airfare is not expensive plus I have miles to use.

Vegas is definitely a fun trip, and one of the reasons I love it so much is that is usually pretty reasonable. Your aunt's timeshare does sound like a great price, but you may also want to look into hotels on the strip. You may be surprised to find out that you wouldn't actually be paying much more. It'd be that much more convenient, and you wouldn't have to pay for a rental car or cabs. I have never been disappointed with any of the hotels I have stayed at on the strip - Harrah's, Bally's, Tropicana, Paris, Luxor, Excalibur - so I really don't think you can go wrong with any, just look for the best deal.

ITA! Cab fare adds up quickly, and since so much of what there is to do in Vegas is on or near the strip, I think it'd be worth it to pay a little more and stay closer. And the PP is right, you may find hotel rates to be fairly low in some places, especially midweek.

I was going to suggest this. The town is really hurting now so you can find some great deals especially midweek. maybe you can split your stay up and stay at her place a coupls nights and on the strip for the others. I have been going at least 2x a year since '95 and my parents also have a home there.

DH actually got an email from Bellagio the other day stating that you can get 25% off the rooms and food. Doesn't hurt to check it out

Re: Vegas anyone?
I'll be staying at MGM for $59 during the week & $139? for the Saturday. There were other hotels on the strip for less than that too.
We usually rent a car anyway so maybe that's an option if you're off the strip? BJs always has percent or dollars off rental car coupons.

Re: Vegas anyone?
DH and I have been to Vegas many times. We've always stayed on the strip except for the last time we went. We stayed at my parents' timeshare. I have to tell you, I enjoyed staying on the strip a lot more. You just feel like you're in the middle of all the action! When we stayed at the timeshare, we opted to rent a car, which was an added expense, but more convenient than relying on cabs.
We've stayed at Monte Carlo, Mirage, Mandalay Bay, and Treasure Island on the strip. Out of all of these hotels, I'd recommend Mirage. They have an AMAZING pool area!
HTH!

Re: Vegas anyone?
I have to agree that, especially for your first Vegas trip, that you should really consider staying on the strip. You can really get some good rates (I usually see great rates for the Luxor and Paris and even better rates for hotels that are 1 star less than those).
Definitely do a bit of research and I'm sure you'll find a great deal. I will caution you though, I stayed on night at the Imperial Palace (3 stars) and it was like a motel 6 on the side of a highway. I've been told that most of the 3 star or less hotels are like that - not sure how accurate that is. Nonetheless, I would stay at a 4* hotel just to be sure (the Paris is a 4* and we paid $99/night, you can usually find similar rates or even lower for Treasure Island, Luxor, Monte Carlo - all 4* hotels). My DH's cousin booked the Circus Circus and checked out first thing the next morning - they said it was horrible. They ended up staying at Mirage (I've stayed there and while my room was not yet upgraded, that was over a year ago so by now most if not all of the rooms should be completed with their upgrades).
Good luck! DH and I don't gamble really, but we love Vegas!
