Vacations when kids are on break from School
Now that my Son is entering Kindergarten, I am starting to think we have to plan vacations around school breaks. I know he is still young, but I figured get into a habit of doing it now.
Are most places insane?? Thinking someplace like Aruba for spring break & getting an idea of crowds.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but everywhere will be close to full capacity and double the regular price during school breaks.

Honestly, you couldn't pay me to take a vacation during school breaks. Aside from insane crowds the ridiculously high price of the vacation itself coupled with airfare is just too much. I can't justify paying 2-3 times as much for a vacation because it falls on a school holiday.
I know not everyone agrees, but we pull our DD from school to go away, it saves a ton and we have a nice, relaxing vacation where we don't have to fight crowds and/or stand on line for hours.

I am leaning towards taking DS out of school as well, just because of the above. All I hear is horror stories of going away during school breaks.

I tend so do driving rips for school breaks and save flying for the summer when it's cheaper.

Vacations when kids are on break from School
I have pulled my two daughters out of school every year for a family trip. One daughter is going into 11th grade and does not feel comfortable going away for a week during such an important school year but even though she's missed a week of school each year - she's still on high honor roll. I say go away when it makes the most sense for your family.

Aruba is insane over December break. Like wake up at 6am, throw a towel on a chair just so you have one insane

ITA! DH and I have limited vacation time, not going to spend it stressed out and aggravated. We will take the kids out of school each year.

ITA. Especially if they're in lower grades. No need to have a vacation that's not relaxing. Maybe if it'll make you feel better, you can take a little of the money you save by going off season into their college savings.

My DH s a teacher, so we always vacation during school breaks and deal with it just fine. I hope anyone that pulls their child for a week is also ok with the teacher taking off for a vacation too!

Vacations when kids are on break from School
I'm a teacher, so we've always done vacations on breaks. Our honeymoon at Disney in the middle of June was completely insane, but driving down at the end of August was not terrible (just very hot). We did a weekend in Mystic, CT during February Break and while it was chilly, we still had a great time and it wasn't too crowded. Two years ago we did Hilton Head, SC the week before school started and had a blast. It was crowded but not insane.

We just planned an impromtu road trip to Disney the last week of August.
Also thinking that will be a good week because the Southerners will be back to school by then.
We nor DS are major into Disney stuff, so we plan to more go with the flow and not get crazy over this trip anyway.

I know people that go to Disney that week. It's not crowded, but obviously it gets hot....just take breaks and you will have a great time!

Teacher is getting paid to be there at certain times. We, in the private sector have very limited time off, and will take vacation when work allows us to do so. Plus, I can't tell you how many times my DC's have had substitutes , so the teachers do take time they need.

Yes, it is very hot but not crazy crowded. We took the kids the week before thanksgiving and apparently everyone else had the same idea  packed!

Spring break is not as bad as Christmas break. Spring break flights are not too bad and hotels might cost double. Winter break flights are like triple and luxury resorts are more like 3-4x the normal price with long minimum stays.
DS just finished kindergarten. We went to Florida (Clearwater Beach) and it was not too bad. I would never go to Disney during any school breaks.
We have a handful of teacher workdays sprinkled around the year. We took 2 vacations on those days. 1 vacation DS missed 1 day of school and another we picked him up early (10am) to catch a flight to Mexico. He was not marked absent.
DH had a conference in Orlando and DS missed 2 days of school for Disney. DH has another conference in Orlando next year. We plan to once again pull DS out of school for 1-2 days for a quick Disney trip.
I don't think we will miss any school for Disney or similar after 1st grade.
