Vacationing with family
How do you handle and avoid hurt feelings when your parents want to join you and your family on summer vacation and you don't want to include your husband's parents?
Any tips on how to broach this issue with inlaws? I don't want to hurt feelings but I also don't want a giant blended vacation with both sides.

Not sure why you would have to invite them also, unless you already had plans to go with them. I have never done vacations with both sides at the same time.

No we haven't invited them or even suggested it but they are the jealous type. My child is the only grandchild and my husband is an only child.

Vacationing with family
Our situation is a little different because my family paid for the vacations - my grandparents took the whole family on a cruise every other year until my grandmother passed away earlier this year. We will never do another cruise as a family with my grandpa (he said he will never do another cruise), but we might do some other all inclusive at some point. Since my grandparents paid it was never a thought to invite my mother in law. That said, we have tried to make a point of doing special vacations with my in-laws separately.

It's not an issue unless you make it one. Just be matter of fact. You don't have to announce it, right?

I'm not sure if my family gets jealous but I just say oh we are going away with my Inlaws.
I wouldn't say anything unless they try and make plans that week. Then I'd say oh we have vacation planned that week. That's all. No need to announce every thing you do

i feel you!!! this is the situation over here, too. my DS is 5- and he's the only grandchild on BOTH sides. so both sets of grandparents want to see him. and my DH is the only child, too....
we've gone on vacation with my parents a couple times (they have vacation house in the outer banks, so every other year we go down with my mom's whole family...) with the ILs...we've done a week long cruise and like one other weekend trip. its tough because you feel like you're hurting feelings--- but its really only a big deal if you make it one i think. just kind of say "we're going to.... with...." or just don't go away with either set of parents, and just tell them both you want to keep vacation time for just the 3 of you....

Same here. But our families would never want to go together - it would be more of an issue if we did want them all to come than if we didn't, lol.
