Vacationing with dogs

My husband and I are planning to go to Universal Studios-Orlando in March. We are going to stay in one of the park hotels, which allows pets. We have 2 pugs about 15 and 20 lbs. I would really like to bring them, but I don't want to have a bad experience on the plane or in the hotel. Can you please share your experiences or options? Thanks in advance! I really don't want to board them!!!

Does your airline allow you to take them carry on? I would talk to your vet about possible sedatives for the plane if they are the nervous type.

Re: Vacationing with dogs

Because they are pugs, you can probably carry them on.
Other than that, just remember that your free time is limited because you will have to keep going back or take them with you during the day.

Personally, if there is someone who can watch them - you might be better off doing that so you can enjoy the parks more.
If you don't really mind the dogs being with you and limiting your free park time - then go for it! We have taken Misty to various places with us and it's fun for her too....

Re: Vacationing with dogs

In addition to the above, ask yourself whether it will be enjoyable for the dogs. Will the stress of traveling be too much for them? Will they be spending a lot of time alone in a hotel room (strange place) while you are out enjoying the parks?

Only you can answer these questions, based on your plans and your dogs' temperments. Chat Icon It may be more enjoyable for ALL if the pups stayed behind with someone... but if you're planning more dog-related activities than anything else, then obviously this leans more toward bringing the pups.

How long will you be gone?

Also, as far as boarding is concerned you don't have to leave them at a kennel. My Grandma's aid doggie sits dogs in her home.

Re: Vacationing with dogs

We brought Molly with us to my parents house in Savannah - and we also brought the new pup Abby (after only having her for a week)

The flight itself isn't that long - two hours - and they were able to sit underneath our chairs. I gave Molly some children's benadryl (per my vet) to calm her down a little bit - it didn't really work.

Abby is always so chill so I didn't give her anything.

We will be going back with Abby in a few months - it really wasn't bad at all. Just make sure that you dont' leave them cooped up in a hotel all day/night.
