vacation within driving distance
DH and I are trying to plan a few days away in August to somewhere within driving distance of NYC. We were considering Newport, Rhode Island, but it just seems so expensive. Any other suggestions?

Montauk?
ETA: You may want to check out the Travel board. I know a lot of people have been asking about local trips.

Re: vacation within driving distance
Last year we went to Lake Placid, which was so nice. We stayed on Saranac Lake.
We just got back from Washington DC.
We are going to Philly in the fall.

Re: vacation within driving distance
We did Newport when we were younger and broke. We stayed at a Marriott residence Inn in Warwick , RI, about a 40 min driv from Newport, so we just had to commute there daily. I know it sounds insane but we saved a lot of money and didn't mind the drive at all

Boston is great, there are lots of things to do with kids that are cheap. If you stay outside the city proper you can drive to a train station and take the T in or the commuter rail even. Or, drive in and park for the day.

Re: vacation within driving distance
I stayed at two different B&Bs in Newport, RI and it was not that expensive at all. Great trip to take.
Other possibilities: DC; Ocean City, MD; Boston; western MA (lots of cute towns and B&Bs)

Do you remember where you stayed? Did they have a pool. i really want to stay somewhere with a pool and haven't found many places that aren't super expensive.

The places we stayed didn't have a pool. Maybe the Doubletree Suites does? That was a very nice hotel also.

Saratoga. Finger Lakes. Philly. Boston. white Mountains in NH Lake Placid (love this place)- and being that the summer olympics is in august this place might be kind of exciting for you guys! You can do a bobsled run and watch the ski jumpers practice by jumping into pools. It;s still a functioning olympic training site and you can watch it all. Plus there is so much to do in the adirondacks.

DH, DD and i just got back from ogunquit, maine. it was a great place for a family! our motel had a pool, and it seemed most of the places to stay in the area had one. also, it is a beach town so the ocean is a 5 minute walk. FM if you want details.

Re: vacation within driving distance
We went to Rehoboth Beach, DE in June and loved it.
Our ILs rented a huge, new house within walking distance of the beach.
The realtor they used was Mann & Sons and Jack Lingo is another realtor.
Only thing that $ucked was we went through Staten Island there and back which added HOURS onto a normal 3.5 hr trip.
Next time I would just go over the GWB ;).
Great restaurants, lots of nice boutiques, small boardwalk (not seedy) and affordable amusement park for kids and the beach was quiet and not packed at all.
I saw they had a few motels as well which may be more affordable than a house.

Newport is great...have been there 3x. You may want to consider staying adjacent to Newport in Middletown or Aquidneck for more reasonable hotel rates. Ocean City, NJ, is an AMAZING family spot as well. Every year it is rated one of the top family vacation destinations. It is a "dry" town so you don't have the wild, partying aspect like Seaside Heights or Wildwood. Tons to do besides the boardwalk as well: pirateship boat rides, the free zoo in Cape May (which is another WONDERFUL family spot), etc. You can Forum Mail me with any questions. I have been going to the Jersey Shore since I was a baby. We leave Saturday ourselves!

Re: vacation within driving distance
Montauk
just came back from a weekend trip there and it was exactly what DH and I needed after a crazy couple of work weeks. There was a few hotels that had vacancies left, but they were the motels- not sure if that matters to you or not. The hotel we stayed at said they advertise they do not have vacancies online, but in fact did have a few rooms on reserves, so it's best to call if you see a hotel online that is booked up.
Wherever you go, have a blast

I love Newport, I've already been twice this summer. Check the Burbank Rose- awesome location and reasonable prices for the area.
