Utilities

I am closing Tuesday and need to know who I call for:

Gas
Electricity
Water
Cable

In Lindenhurst, suffolk county

Also here is something I thought was strange. The owners are already out of the house we are closing on Tuesday. They left about a week ago or so. We were told by our lawyer to turn on the electricity now so we would have electric during our walk-through (this weekend, Sunday). Does this sound right? I told my husband I don't see how it is OUR responsibility. Because I technically don't "own" the house until after closing. And so wouldn't it be their responsibility to provide electric during the time when the walk-through is done. I think the electricity will still be on since they left only a week ago since the electric companies don't actually shut off the power. I remember moving into my apartment and live here 14 days before calling to let them now I moved in!

I justed needed to vent a little...

Anyhow, TIA for info!!

Re: Electricity

One of my friends was told to call about the electricity before she moved in as well but like you she was hesitant. Her solution - go by the house in the evening when it is dark and see if any lights are on. When she did, there was a hall light on and she knew that she didn't have to call LIPA before they closed.

Re: Utilities

You should probably call now about the electricity.

When I called (before closing) to get it turned on, they said it would take about a week for it to happen. You just tell them you want your start date to be the day of closing.

I don't know if I called at an especially bad time of the year, if they only said that because they knew they had time, or if that is the actual amount of time it would take to process.
