Uterine Fibroids
So I have uterine fibroid that is 7cm!!!! I believe he said it was anterior.....I was told i had a fibroid when PG with DS, but it was small and the dr said it wasn't a concern and he never mentioned it again....in all honesty I forgot about it i guess. My RE, Dr Braverman said this could be cause of the 2 mc's and I will probably need surgery....full out surgery overnight in the hospital and everything. Not happy! he suggested we see how all the other tests come back before we make any decisions about it.
What can you tell me about uterine fibroids? Have you had any removed? What was that like?
TIA

Re: Uterine Fibroids
Unfortunately I had 13 fibroids, which actually caused the loss of my pregnancy at 21 weeks. It also caused other complications for me during the pregnancy. They actually start out as seeds in the uterus and grow over time. They grow with estrogen too that occurs with pregnancy. I am obviously a unique case having 13, but I have a great doctor in NYC to get rid of it if your RE will not do it. Did he tell you what type of myomectomy you will need? I had an abdominal one which is 2 days in the hospital, but my guess is that yours might be laproscopic since you only have one. Feel free to FM with questions!

He told me that he'd make a small incision in the bikini area and basically scoop out the fibroid.......that is muscle cells that mulitply ?!?!?! Next time I see him I will have to ask more questions....if you know any I should ask that would be so great. Thanks for sharing

Re: Uterine Fibroids
It is not muscle cells - fibroids are benign tumors that grow in wall of the uterus.
Some suggested questions are:
1) Find out about the surgery, how many of these he has done.
2) I would ask about scar tissue and if he puts anything on the uterus to help prevent it from occuring.
3) Find out about the adhesion - if you are gettings staples (I had staples but I had 13) or steri strips, etc.
4) If you will need a c-section for future pregnancies
5) Likelihood of it returning (they can come back) or other ones popping up. Will he check your uterus to see if there are any other small ones in there? Will he remove them if there are as long as he in there?
That's all I can think of for now!

Hmmm, i'm sure he said muscle cells...i'll have to ask about that again.
Those are really great questions! Thanks so much, if you think of anymore please feel free to send them my way

Can you tell me more about the procedure......he did not say the procedure was laproscopic but rather an incision in the bikini line and a night in the hos[ital. Can you tell me about your recovery period?
Maybe it was just described differently to me. I have been looking on the internet and many things mention muscle cells. Here's one:
Uterine fibroids are nodules of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue that develop within the wall of the uterus. Medically they are called a uterine leiomyoma. The factors that initiate fibroid growth are not known. The vast majority of fibroids occur in women of reproductive age and are the most frequently diagnosed tumor of the female pelvis. It has been estimated that up to 20-30% of women of reproductive age have fibroids, though not all have been diagnosed. It is important to know that these are benign tumors. They are not associated with cancer, they virtually never develop into cancer, and they do not increase a woman's risk for uterine cancer.
As fibroids grow, they may outgrow their blood supply, resulting in necrosis (destruction of tissue), calcification, and various types of degeneration. However, unless there are chronological scans to compare changes in the appearance of the fibroids, I would think it nearly impossible to determine whether they are degenerative.
Many times fibroids cause no symptoms at all. For women who do experience symptoms, the following can occur: excessive or painful bleeding during menstruation, bleeding between periods, a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen, frequent urination resulting from a fibroid that compresses the bladder, pain during sexual intercourse, and/or low back pain.

Re: Uterine Fibroids
I had 1 huge one removed also...
They are not always inside the uteran wall... sometimes they are outside of the wall.
I would def make sure you have a experienced surgeon do this procedure... I had my OB (at the time) do it and she couldn't find the fibroid which was 6"!!! How can you not find that? She then told me she didn't think I had fibroids and that I might have a rare type of cancer... Long story short, make sure you have a specialist do the surgery... called "myomectomy"
After a ton more test with the previous OB, I then went to a specialist at Columbia in the city, we scheduled another surgery and he found and took the fibroid out, no problem.
I would DEF make sure you get more then one opinion, if you have any question feel free to FM.
My surgery was a little more intense, It was a c-section cut, and I was in the hospital for 3 days, and had to take off work for like 4 week... pretty much healing from a c-section.
As a previous poster said... once you have this, you most likely will be having a c-section when you do have a baby.
Good Luck!!! and FM if you have any questions!!!

I also went to Columbia -saw a doctor from Fibroid Center of NY -highly recommend them.

Re: Uterine Fibroids
I had multiple fibroids removed several years ago. I read a lot about it and I interviewed several doctors. I got a variety of opinions about whether I needed laparoscopic surgery or an incision in my bikini line. For a variety of reasons, I am now more of a proponent of the open surgery. Do you have symptoms? I did. My largest fibroid was posterior, though. I don't remember exactly how to explain it but the cells of a fibroid are smooth muscle cells. If you have a doctor in mind, there is a chance that it's someone I have an opinion about, one way or the other. I was obsessive with the doctor interviews at the time .
