The historic aircraft carrier USS Intrepid is returning to its Manhattan pier Thursday after a 22-month overhaul.
More than 300 veterans who served on the ship will be lining the rail as it is towed north from the Staten Island Homeport across New York Harbor and up the Hudson River to its new Manhattan home at Pier 86. En route the ship and the veterans will participate in a flag ceremony in the waters adjacent to Ground Zero.
The Essex-class carrier gained legendary status during World War II, surviving Japanese kamikaze attacks and playing a pivotal role in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, earning the nickname "The Fighting I."
The ship will be the focal point of the newly-refurbished Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, which is scheduled to reopen Nov. 8 following a $120-million restoration project.
The Intrepid is scheduled to be berthed at the pier sometime between 1:30-2 p.m.
ETA: The ship reopens for the public Nov. 8 at Pier 86, at 12th Avenue and West 46th Street. After an expenditure of almost $120 million since the carrier was finally relocated in December 2006, visitors will see new exhibits, areas of the 29,000-ton ship launched in 1943 that were formerly off limits during its first 23 years on display and additional historic aircraft and they have access from a newly built pier topped by a free park.

we've been looking out the window at work waiting for it....I'm right on the water in Jersey City. I wish I had my camera! its pretty cool to see such a historic ship coming down the Hudson!
