using roman numerals after name
Maybe I'm not using the right search term, but i can't find consistent info on this when I google.
When giving your DS a family name, do you have to use a roman numeral or can you just use the same name? I really don't care for the roman numeral at all!!
And do roman numerals take into account only living people with the same name or deceased who had the same name as well?
If we have a boy, he will have the same name as DH and my FIL so if we have to use a Roman numeral, would he be the III or would he be the IV because DH's grandfather also had the same name before he died?
I would solve this issue by using a middle name, but DH is against it because he doesn't have one.
ETA: I should add that DH, while technically the III, was not given a Roman Numeral when he was born. He, his father, and grandfather shared the same name with no legal distinction between them. Would I just continue this?

Re: using roman numerals after name
My DH's name is Edward.
His grandfather and father are also named Edward.
Edward: DH's grandfather Edward Jr: DH's father Edward III: my DH
In our case, my husband was completely adamant that he did not want a IV. I was fine with that.
I don't know if you have to have roman numerals after the name, but it does help for identity purposes.
Even when filling out medical forms, I write my DH's full name with III after. I want them to know that HE is my husband and not my father-in-law, God forbid any serious medical decisions need to be made on my behalf.

Re: using roman numerals after name
DH wanted to name our DS the III... I pretty much put my foot down & made him see the light of day because he had issues having the same name as his Father & my Father had issues having the same name as my Brother.
If it's definitely something you're doing I would most definitely use the Roman numeral at the end & he would be the IV.

Your son will be IV. Your DH is III.

This was our situation exactly. DH wanted to name our DS after him and he would have been the fifth... so he would have had V after his name.. but I too made him see the light of day since we ran into a lot of identity/confusion issues.
But yeah i would use the roman numeral to distinguish his name.
