UPDATED: Breastfeeding moms
I started nursing in the hospital with DD. We did well with latching and at times she would nurse for up to a half hour. But then after would be screaming and making hunger cues. Eventually I began to supplement with formula. Once my milk came in I was so engorged that I began pumping and feeding via bottle. DD is gaining weight and thriving. THe pediatrician this morning mentioned starting to nurse again. Has anyone transitioned from bottle back to breast?

Breastfeeding moms
i did, DD was in the NICU when she was born because I had a fever, she was formula fed, then I started to pump and breastfeed but then I had another fever in the hospital so she was FF again, and by the time we left I still had to FF and pump and dump. When we went to our first peds appointment the dr also said I should nurse instead of pump and bottle feed her. I would recommend getting a lactation consultant. I was lucky that the LC was able to help me with latching when I was in the hospital and it was a bit of a struggle but she was able to catch on. I'm again having some problems with latching, shallow latch and its causing me some pain and I was thinking about calling a LC to some and help me with latching.

Do I go through the insurance company to get a lactation consultant? We have both been discharged from the hospital.

I was encouraged to give LO's milk when I had a fever. I wonder why you were discouraged?

You should be able to. So much easier then pumping!!! Definitely worth a try.

I had a fever on and off for 7 days and I was on antibiotics that was not breastfeeding friendly so I had to pump and dump for 4 days because they could not figure out what was causing the fever.

Unfortunately my insurance does not cover it but I found a consultant that did not charge an arm and a leg on Yelp

Where are you located? I used a pediatrician in riverhead that's also a LC. Since we saw a doctor the insurance company paid for it like any other visit, I just had to pay separate copays for myself and DD.

Re: Breastfeeding moms
I was unsuccessful with breastfeeding while in the hospital but was determined to bf. I pumped and supplemented with formula until dd was 1 week old and miraculously decided to latch! I went to a breast feeding support group that day at the hospital I delivered at and it was a major reason for my success. I continued to go weekly while on maternity leave. I'm now 10 days fom 1 year of breast feeding. So yes, it can be done! Keep trying!

Re: Breastfeeding moms
yes. i has to pump and bf in the beginning to get my supply going. your dd isnt that old, so it should be relatively easy to go back to nursing.
fwiw... a nb will take forever to nurse. totally normal. it doesnt mean you're not making enough or that something is wrong. its just how they roll. just keep nursing, and she'll eat faster as she gets older. sounds like you're doing well so far!!!
eta: where do you live? an lll meeting or other bfing group would be really helpful... and free!!

Breastfeeding moms
Definitely..I did..I exclusively pumped for 3 mo..bec she was a lazy latcher...and one day I was too lazy to go down stairs to get a bottle and to my surprised she latched...I was so excited! And we continued until she was a year old..I still say she just needed to be a little more mature to breastfeed...give it a dot..may not work first try but ya never know?!

The next meeting I think is Nov.8th. They just switched from the 1st to the 2nd thursday of the month. I went this month for the first time and it was great.
Peconic Pediatrics is where I went for a lactation consultation and they were amazing. Definitely worth the drive IMO and they saw me the next day when I called.

Re: Breastfeeding moms
Update: I keep going back and forth between giving up on nursing vs. pumping vs. FF. I feel guilty for "giving up" so early with BF and I still want to but DD doesn't seem to want anything to do with nursing. DD will be 3 weeks on wednesday. Is it a lost cause? I'm about to throw in the towel and switch to formula.

Have you tried a nipple shield? The tip is like a bottle so your LO may be more receptive to the breast with that. Especially if you have the supply, you should try to give it to her! Don't give up.

Yes, and she will latch and then push away and start to cry.

I haven't tried this. Will I always have to nurse witht he nipple sheild or will I be able to nurse naturally eventually?

I've never used one but from what I've heard you should be able to wean the baby off of it.
Have you met with a LC? Personally, I would continue to pump and or nurse until you make up your mind for sure just so that you don't lose the option. Just know that if nursing doesn't work out you DC will still do great.

Have you tried breast compression while she nurses? Totally making this up, but what about pumping until you get a let down and then trying to get her to latch on. Maybe that would help her get the idea.
Here are some ideas from kellymom.com Help-My Baby Won't Nurse

Re: UPDATED: Breastfeeding moms
Don't give up just yet. My DD never got the hang of BF/latching and I have pumped for 5 months. She gets the benefit of BM.
I did seek help from lactation specialists and found Peconic Pediatrics in Riverhead (they may have Western Offices) has lactation specialists that worked with me with pumping, schedule, etc. See help from a specialist before giving up.
If it doesn't work out, then you know you did everything. FF babies are healthy and happy, too. Good Luck

Re: UPDATED: Breastfeeding moms
dont give up if this is what you want. I had so many issues with ds latching that we both spent nights crying and he wound up with formula. It took weeks for milk to come in. One of my friends told me to get nipple shields. Once i did that, he latched like a champ. We are still going strong at 3+ months. He does latch by himself now, but we still every so often need the shield. If you want it, dont give up.

Dont give up, I think you just need more guidance, try to find a breastfeeding group or if you have a friend who has breastfeed ask them to help you. I had a lot of trouble and breastfed through tears because I was in so much pain but now dd is latching on like a champ
