Re: MrsNaunie - you think you have problems with your bush?????
I have never seen anything like that! horrible. Aren't hornets the most aggressive?
That would actualy be a welcome releif, only because DH is the man about killing wasps and stuff.
I think it would be the worst to have hornets in your bush. A stinging bush. dangerous.

soooo true!!!!!
Bald-faced hornets are extremely protective of their nests and will sting repeatedly if disturbed.

Re: MrsNaunie - you think you have problems with your bush?????
Wow - thats crazy. I just killed a bees nest in our BBQ that had previously been the home of 2 bees that stung my husband (and he's allergic so we spent hours in the emergency room).
I was all proud of my nest destroying until I saw that - wow.
I was intrigued and decided to look at more hornets nests, so I decided to check it out on google images.. I never expected to see this! Check out one of the images that came up on the first page

What do they even DO with a nest like that? I want to say they... smoke them out? Am I just making that up?
Good luck with your pest problems, ladies!

Yuck! We have had wasps building mud nests between the siding on our house which I thought was bad but that is one nasty hornets nest. Scary!!

Re: Update re: Hornets Nest!
Wow... that's some hornets nest!
Speaking of hornets/wasps, etc...
Last weekend I had a girls weekend since DH was away, and we kept seeing this wasp flying around with a twig while we were out on the patio One of my girlfriends said she kept feeling something on the bottom of her chair that felt like something poking her. So we get up and are looking around and flip the chair over, and this wasp was trying to build a nest underneath the chair she was sitting on! What she felt were the twigs it was sticking between the holes in the chair! There were about 10 of the twigs there already.
Mr Wasp found himself face to face with a stream of Raid wasp spray after that.

Re: Update re: Hornets Nest!
sorry - didn't see this before
We had someone come out yesterday and remove the nest! first he sprayed some chemicals onto the nest directly, and then he did a "knock down" - the nest broke in half, part of it was the layers of paper, the other part was the actual nest (cells).... let me tell you, it was GROSS!!!!!! there were HUNDREDS of "cubicles", alot of which contained the larva (and some of them WERE MOVING!!!!!!! ) - while others contained fully grown hornets, just waiting to hatch!!! i didn't get to take a pic, but found one online that looks VERY similar to what i saw yesterday!

Re: Update re: Hornets Nest!
when I was little, my mom was a renegade nest killer.... I always thought she was nuts for doing it herself.
She'd wait until november (when they're pretty much dormant) and she'd spray the nest herself, and then did something (can't remember) to destroy it.....
glad your 'problem' is compeletely gone. It's great he took the creepy evidence away with him.... yuk!

Re: Update re: Hornets Nest!
You get from me.
I would seriously have considered moving. I have a fly in my apt. tonite, and I'm ready to shut myself away to escape it. If I had a hornet's nest on my property, I really don't know if I could deal. Not a nature girl here, in case you couldn't tell.
