UPDATE: Moulding's Question...also, requesting pics??

UPDATE:
I spoke with our Painter last night and he told me not to worry about the moulding's because they're only doing ceilings in the main part of the house and the bedrooms/bathroom today. So I have time to help Hubby take down the moulding's and put up new ones this weekend Chat Icon Chat Icon Thanks so much for the help/ideas. anyone have any more pics of their pretty mouldings to show me for ideas????

Hi Ladies.

I'm having an issue, not really a big deal but it's upsetting me so much.

We just bought a new house and my mom is actually bringing in my cousin who is a professional painter to paint for us. It's really great and a big help but he asked that DH put up moulding's before he come in to paint. Last minute he called us and told us he would be there Monday (yesterday) so DH ran out and picked up moulding's over the weekend and they all put them up together.

So I get there last night and I LOVE the crown moulding but around the base and doorway's, DH used this generic cheap ugly moulding that I hate (Especially in the dining room). He got so upset and freaked out when I mentioned it last night and offered to stay home today and rip it all out...but I couldn't let him do that. I'm trying to push the painting off until next week so that maybe we can fix it this weekend.

Anyway, my question is....do you ladies have any pics of the mouldings around your doorways and floors?? It doesn't have to be anything extravagant, just looking for ideas. I HATE HATE HATE being rushed and was hoping my home would look really nice. Any ideas/help you can give would be so much appreciated.

THANK YOU. Chat Icon

Why not just let him paint then figure out what you want.. They can add crown and base afterwards

I honestly never understand why people would want the molding up first before painting? It's so much easier, faster, and you get better lines if you paint the walls without the molding, paint the molding off the wall, then install the painted molding. Yes, you may need to touch-up the molding where the nails were, but overall, it makes things so much easier and faster.

i think it would be easier if you did the molding last - that way you dont have to paint all the trim by hand...

Re: Moulding's Question...also, requesting pics??

Diana - I really love that moulding, thanks! That's kinda what i'm looking for, just the shape wouldn't go with my crown.

We are putting the moulding's up first b/c my cousin is a professional painter so he'll be painting the house and requested it. I think they go around and fix any cracks then paint it while they're doing the walls....I have no idea. If that's what he wants, that's what I do Chat Icon as long as I don't have to do it haha.

Re: Moulding's Question...also, requesting pics??

we had moulding put up first as well... I questioned why we wouldn't paint the moulding while it was down and then put it up, but whatever - we hired someone too and that's what they wanted.

We got all our moulding from Florence Bldg Supply in Huntington.

I bet your trim and base don't look cheap at all - once it's painted it will probably look really nice.

its easier to put it up then putty everything and paint... Putting it up afterwards painted then putting nail gun holes in it is a pain

I've personally done both methods. For me, it was so much easier just touching up the painted molding afterwards, rather than trying to paint along the molding edges after it's up, especially if the molding is over your head. The professional painters I had were extremely good, but even they couldn't get as crisp a line along the molding and wall line as if I painted it first, then put them up.
It's faster, too, since you don't have to be neat with the edges on either the wall, or the molding. The time you spend touching up the nail holes is more than saved in painting time.

I second that.. i've done both and its such a PIA to paint next to the molding when its already installed.

As for the OP question - you can always change the molding that you don't like later - perhaps leave it up there and have it painted so something is there and then take your time finding something you like and have it installed later? no need to rush through it. you may even find that you like it once its up (or don't notice it as much)

ITA! I'm sure it's not ugly. Base molding is base molding I think. I don't like too many curves personally, but that is just me. Chat Icon

What don't you like about it?

Once the walls are painted a color and all your stuff is in, you might just like the base molding. GL! Chat Icon

ETA: this is my hallway with the base molding.

Some of our molding. It's the same profile, but downstairs we stained, and upstairs, we used cheaper stuff and painted it.
