***Update*** Becoming overwhelmed with worry

So we just got back from infectious disease dr and it is showing a virus but all the other tests came back fine and he said he tested for the "bad stuff" and it was all negative thank god. His fevers are inly getting to about 101 now and there us much more time in between each fever so dr thinks it is towards the end of virus. Last night was the first night in 8 days he did not wake up with a fever. So hoping this is it.
Thanks for all the replies

DS is 3. Last Monday he woke up with a fever. Took him to PM Pediatrics checked him out and did strep test and determined it was a virus. By Wednesday he was worse. Fever reaching 104, complaining of being dizzy and barely eating. Took him to the pediatrician who after an exam said Virus. Thursday was horrific. He started puking(about 5 times in total) and fever reached 105.3. Went straight to Good Sam ER. They did blood work, uranalysis and chest xray. Again they said virus. Now since Thursday he has had many breaks in the fever where he is acting normal, playing, and running around but the fever still comes back. Not as high as 105 but it has hit 104. So yesterday, Sunday I took him to south Side ER because I am panicking. They did a nasal smear test and it showed a virus. But the virus it showed was rhinovirus which is the common cold. I cannot imagine this is from a cold. He was good for a while last night but woke up again in the middle of the night burning up. We have an apt with an infectious disease dr tomorrow but I am beside myself. I am so scared and my boy has been through so much already. My mind goes to the absolute worse (the C word). Anyones child ever have something similar? Any words of advice or encouragement? He has no other symptoms. None

My 2 year old had the same thing last year. It was virus,
It's good if the fever is coming down
For us Advil worked better than Tylenol
If he is keeping down fluids that's good .. hope the vomiting isssue is gone

Have they checked for a UTI? My friends daughter was in good sam for 2 days with a 105 fever over the weekend. What is his white count / blood work looking like?

All if blood work normal

Becoming overwhelmed with worry

Has he been anywhere that he could have been bitten by a tick?

I guess in reality he could. He is outside often. Although he has not been in a wooded area. And I have not seen any signs of a bite but I am sure infectious disease dr will test for that tmrw

I thought this too!!

I found a tick in my sons car seat right before I put him in it Chat Icon Chat Icon

my DH thinks he might have brought it in the car when he went fishing on Sunday but I found it the Friday after. I am not 100% sold that it was in the car for that long but that's what he is saying.

Tick season is supposed to be really bad this season!

Yes def make sure they test for that.

Hope he feels better soon. It's so scary when our kids are so sick with a high fever.

Re: Becoming overwhelmed with worry

Part of me thinks that since there are breaks in the fever that it's just a nasty virus. Luckily you are vigilant and following up with a specialist. Many hugs and prayers for you and your boy, it's so hard to see your little one so sick!

Typically summer is the season for fever viruses - where high fevers come and go for a week or so... It is horrible and scary but it is likely just a virus.

It's good to get it checked out though by a specialist to ease any worries you may have.

DD had a virus and it lasted quite a while with very high fevers, too. I don't have any real advice for you except to say it was scary until it was over. Hang in there, mama! I hope he's feeling better soon! Chat Icon Chat Icon

It's only been a fever for a few days. It's a virus. Could be a nasty form of rhinovirus. Maybe he has something on top of that.

I know that parainfluenza is going around and that's similar to your DC presentation... pretty horrific. Lasts about a week.

DS gets ridiculously high fevers whenever he gets sick. Has your DS ever had roseola? DS had something like this, the ped told me virus, and once the fever broke he broke out in the rash.

Maybe he had one thing and caught another at urgent care or doctor office. My sister's kids have been battling GI bug and croup (we think croup was caught at peds office when she went for GI bug). Same time course: started on Monday and kids are just getting better today.

Either way... I hope (and think) it's not going to be something big. The normal blood work is a great sign. It usually rules out lots of stuff.

Hoping a good appointment for you tomorrow!!!

It sounds like it's just a nasty virus especially since his blood work looks good and there were breaks in the fever. I hope he feels better soon!

Please have him tested for Lyme disease. It is bad this year. If that is what it turns out to be, the earlier the treatment, the better.

***Update*** Becoming overwhelmed with worry

Of course get him checked for everything under the sun but this happened to my nephew last year. The Drs said he much have had one virus and then another one just piggy backed on top of it. I think he had a fever for 10 days. It would break and then come back. Hope it's just that and nothing serious. Keeping my fingers crossed. Please update.

DD had that two years ago. Scary high fevers - 104.9 and it was just a virus but scared the crap out of me. Glad he's on the mend!
