Update - Expired anti-biotics
I didn't see my normal doctor. Doctor on call seemed less than pleased with what I did but rx the same ab.
However I asked the pharmacist and he told me there was no harm to my daughter, the worst is the AB would be slightly less strong. He said he thought I did the right thing for a one time situation knowing today I would get a fresh bottle. Also please note the AB were expired for less than two months. If it had been longer I wouldn't have tried it.
After my dds second dose she is barely coughing so I am pleased it didn't have a chance to get worse. Whenever it does a fever usually accompanies it.
My dd has asthma and any time she has allergies or a cold it pretty much turns into a horrible cough that only anti-biopics can clear up. It's sucks.
I wanted to take her today to the walk in and my mom convinced me to wait another day (for the past 7 days been treating with nebulizer and Claritin - it's held it off but not she needs an anti-biotic).
So I have a bottle from last time. Filled 6-1-15 and says expires 6-15-15. Would it be horrible to give to her? She's coughing soooooo hard. I know she's in for a right night without it. AB work within an hour and curb her cough instantly.
I know my doc would have no problem with this. But don't know if the med is too far gone.
Side note I currently want to murder my mom and am so mad at myself I listened to her.

Expired anti-biotics
are you saying your meds exp in 15 days? My pharmacist always tells me drugs don't exp right away,

Why didn't you finish the bottle last time? You should not have any left over? By not finishing a prescribed antibiotic, even if your child looks or says they are feeling better, you are creating drug resistant bacteria. Also regular colds are not meant for antibiotics.

Yes I filled the rx June 1st and the expiration date is the 15th. It was a 10 day cycle. So it's almost 2mos expired.

Um I did finish her cycle last time as I always do and I always have about the same amount left over. Sometimes more. It's what the pharmacist gives me. No idea why.
And I know anti-biotics aren't for colds.
With my daughter she has asthma. So a cold for your child remains that, a cold. A cold for my child, or allergies create fluid deep in her lungs where everything is tight (restrictive airway disease) after a few days this fluid turns bacterial.
Any time she has been on the wrong anti-biotic after a day or two we end up in the ER bc she is coughing so horribly she winds up vomiting mucus and can't breathe. I am a very natural holistic person but absolutely nothing works for her once it turns bacterial except the anti-biotics. I thank god they exist.

Do you have an in home nebulizer? Our pharmacy never give extra which is why I questioned it. Also, please don't assume that we don't have asthma issues in our household.

we always have extra too . i would try it but then again i always go to the dr. esp if no relief from neb for 7 days.
is your dd on a maintenance inhaler?

I do have a nebulizer. Been using for 8 days with Clartin and its held the cough at bay until Friday when it started getting worse and no longer sounding tight.
I am not assuming anything. I wrote that to show the example between a cold in a normal child and a cold with my child who has asthma. And to show why a cold or why allergies would require anti-biotics.

She is too young for an inhaler. We have one but she doesn't get how to use it. Unfortunately we were on vacation and only got home late last night. Was trying to hold off until we could get to her doc. She did maintenance nebulizer. Steroid twice a day for a month, then once a day for a month. Then stopped. A month later now here we are.
I gave the AB last night and she stopped coughing immediately. Only coughed 2x through out the night. However we are going to doc in 30m. I'll check and see if I get yelled out for what I did!

I wouldn't. Don't you need a FULL course of antibiotics to clear something up, and for it to not come back? If you only do a couple of days, you are risking it IMO. There are tons of walk in clinics, I would just go to one.

I am glad you were able to see a doctor. The reason I think it was not good to give the meds the way you did is that is the exact way drug resistant bacteria can develop. If you see your dc is not getting better after a few days go back to the doctor. You don't want to spend a month on medicine.

Update - Expired anti-biotics
My daughter is currently taking liquid antibiotics and the expiration date is 11/2016, so over a year from when prescribed. So I'm sure it's fine that you gave your DD some from a couple months ago. I'm glad she's feeling better.
