Umm - trash or treasure?
We started renovations/remodeling on Monday and have had a few surprises since then. Most of them more PITA surprises, not surprises that will cost us $$$$$ thank God.
This was our discovery today... knotty pine under the paneling in the living room on three walls.
FIL says we must keep it - it's more expensive than sheetrock and you can't even get it like that anymore.
DH agrees.
I'm trying to visualize it sanded down and stained but I have a hard time not visualizing a log cabin look, which is what I don't want. I'm all for unique, but is there a way to incorporate this in a living room without it looking straight out of a log cabin?

I do agree that you cant get it like that anymore BUT if it doesn't fit your decor, then I say rip it down and sell it on Craigslist. Someone out there will want it. Do not throw it away.

Treasure! That's butterfly panneling... we are trying to find that to put in our sunroom and it's hard to get! We're painting ours white.

Agreed, if your decor is cottage-style you have so many options with it. Painting it white like PP said would definitely lighten it up and rid it of the log cabin-esque feel. Good luck!

We have something similar in our laundry room. It was dark like that when we bought the house, we've since primed & painted it a light blue.

i think it's unique. i'd paint it too as pp have said.
keep it. you can always take it down if you absolutely cannot stand the way it comes out. it's only going to cost a few dollars and some elbow grease... you can't beat that!

Re: Umm - trash or treasure?
I have the same thing!! 2" thick pine solid wood walls in my den. My father said the same about them being treasure. We cannot afford to renovate right now so they stay, but when we can , I think we will take them down and turn them into bookshelves on either side of my brick fireplace.
ETA- leave them for a while, they may grow on you (they did on us, kinda)

We took down a wall of it in our LR...and it is on all 4 walls in our kitchen - which we plan on tearing down once we renovate that room. We took care in removing the boards due to the "treasure" aspect of it. I'll speak with my DH and see if he's interested in parting with it...right now it sits atop beams in our garage.

Re: Umm - trash or treasure?
you can take it down and use it as a ceiling (sanded down and refinished) or maybe for flooring.

Re: Umm - trash or treasure?
If you can completely sand it down, I'd consider white washing or pickling it. (I'm not really sure of the difference--but that sheer white look.)

Re: Umm - trash or treasure?
I think it completely depends on your style and decor. I for one would keep it and paint it white. I love the look of a beachy cottage and I think its definitely become more of the style lately. If you dont like it or it doesn't mesh well with your furnishings, you can always sell it so to me it a win/win situation.
Good luck on your decision

Re: Umm - trash or treasure?
We had the knotty pine in the entire basement. We had the painters oil prime and paint it white. It looks nice for a basement. I don't think I would love it in my main living area. BUT I have very modern tastes. I will say every worker who has come in has commented on how great it is!

Re: Umm - trash or treasure?
I'm not so sure about leaving it in the living room. It does clash with our tastes and I think it'll clash with the refinished hardwood floors. I don't want to leave it just because it's valuable.
I'm going to see if we can remove it and install it somewhere else like in the office or paint it and put it in a bathroom. Every room in this house is getting something so it wouldn't be going out of our way too much to do that.

Re: Umm - trash or treasure?
Sounds like you really don't want it in your LR, but I would def. keep it for another room in your house. It would look beautiful painted white. GL!
