Ultrascreen? Can someone please explain...
exactly what this is? Can it be called something else? My doctor has not used this term with me and I'm confused.
Thanks!

Re: Ultrascreen? Can someone please explain...
it's a test done in the first tri to test for DS or Trisomy 18. (It may have been called a Nuchal Translucency by your doc.) They do a blood test and a sonogram to measure the skin fold in the back of the baby's neck.

Re: Ultrascreen? Can someone please explain...
Ultrascreen is a type of sonogram paired with bloodwork usually administered around your 12th week of pregnancy.
The sono measures the neuchal fold of the baby's neck (for an indication of Down Syndrome) and the bloodwork tests for other chromosomal abnormalities.
Not all Drs require this test to be done.

My DH does not want to do this because of the high false positive rates. I think we are doing it though. With multiples the rate is around 15% false positive. Ugh don't know what to do.

Hmm...yeah, I don't think I am getting this. Is that bad? I am getting bloodwork to check on DS and other genetic disorders, but not another sono I don't think.

My doctor said she ordered it (she called it the nuchal translucency) because I'm 30 and will be 31 when I deliver. If I was younger I probably wouldn't have been told to get one. It's much less invasive than at CVS or Amnio so we decided to do it. The false positive rate for singles is pretty low.

I never had this done. I've had the bloodwork, but I cant recall my doc measuring the skin fold.

yeah, it definitely DOES have a high false positive rate.... I think something like 90% of the positives are false....
HOWEVER, I believe it also has a very low false negative rate... so if you get good results, you're in the clear.
we decided to do the ultrascreen and AFP tests becuase if we got good results (which we did ) we would opt out of the much more invasive amnio... amnio's are super conclusive, but they carry along with them some degree of risk... and I'd personally rather risk the worry of a false positive than the worry of recovery from an amnio... (I should add that if we DID get a false positive, we likely would have opted for an amnio for more conclusive results)
but these are decisions you and your DH have to weigh out for yourselves with your Dr's guidance....

Re: Ultrascreen? Can someone please explain...
It wasn't required at my doctor's office. However we opted for it. I think it might also be called the first trimester screen

I just turned 31 and am pregnant with my 3rd and these tests were always elective for me. I always chose to have them performed because to me it was important to have a peaceful state of mind. It was never a requirement.

My doctor called it nuchal translucency also. I am going to have it done next week thursday. However I am only 23 (I will be 24 when DC is born). He said he does this test for all of his patients.

Sorry I should have been clearer. She did not require it. I guess the word "ordered" may have inferred that. She just said that was why she recommended it. This is my first pregnancy.
