Ugh...Viacord vent
Okay so I'm 31 weeks pregnant and am really trying to decide whther i want to bank my baby's cord blood.'
I met with a woman from Viacord a few weeks back and she was not very informative. She basically kept telling me to look into it and decide if it's something I want to do.
Obviously I know nothing about it and needed some info.
So I get all this literature in the mail and decide to call them and ask some questions. You think they would be happy to help.
Well, the rep, who seemed to not want to help, gave me one word answers and kept telling me that the answers to each of my questions was online or in the pamphlets.
It was obvious that I was getting annoyed toward the end and pretty much acknowledged how unhelpful he was, and said "thanks bye" He was just like "bye"
When I called CBR I didn't even have to ask anything, they just explained everything to me.
Oh yeah - the only thing that the viacord rep had to say was negative things about CBR (I HATE companies that do that!) How unprofessional!
I WON'T be using them.
Just had to vent. Thanks

What does CBR stand for. I need to decide this also, and I was thinking of using Viacord. Maybe I will call the other company instead.

Cord Blood Registry. I think they were one of the first companies to do this.

I am using CBR. Viacord was so aggressive. There are other reasons I chose CBR though.

FYI: There are many other companies out there besides viacord and CBR. They just do the most advertising and are well known because of it. If you do some research you can find other banks that have the same accreditations and are less expensive.

Yes I have been looking into this. I spoke to a rep from Cryo-Cell who was VERY helpful.
One thing though that I didn't like was that you have to fedex the samples to them. They are in Florida. There is no temp control or anything. I would think this would be important.
Do you know of other reutable companies?

I went with the Elie Katz Family Cord blood bank. They are in NJ and will send a courier to the hospital to pick up the blood. They only have agreements with a few hospitals in the area though, so you have if the hospital you will be delivering is one of them. They are so helpful and nice when you speak to them. They are also a not-for-profit group. They are associated with the NJ public cord blood bank, so their staff has done more transplants than any of the for-profit banks. This is their website
I actually found them while I was researching donation options. They can give you information on that too, if its something you are thinking about doing.
