Ughh DH Is driving me CRAZY!!!!!

So we are doing A LOT or organic stuff for the baby. Mattress, sheets bassinett etc.....

Well DH now doesn't want her wearing ANYTHING but organic clothing and seems to think that 5-7 pjamas are enough clothes to have around Chat Icon Chat Icon

SO I'm trying to go through all the clothes I got at my shower to make piles of places to try and return some of the stuff and he basically wants me to return it all.....

I'm at my wits end.... we have to finish buying EVERYTHING off the registry because all we got were clothes for the shower. And now I'm going to have to buy organic clothes on top of all of this.....

Forst off I don't knwo where he thinks all this $$$ is coming from and seriously this is starting to become a PITA....

I feel like we are doing more than most people do in buying the organic mattress and sheets etc where she will spend a lot of her time but ALL of her clothes????

I swear I'm going to have a nervous breakdown this week with him......

And he's is STUBBORN as SH*T!!! SO there is really no convincing him.... I'll get "you aren't going to poison my daughter with all these chemicals"Chat Icon

SH*T dude... Im having the freaking baby at home, naturally on top of everythign we are doing what the hell more can I do?

Please don't quote... I'll probably take this down....Chat Icon

Re: Ughh DH Is driving me CRAZY!!!!!

Wow, he is going a little over the top! The clothing will be washed before she wears it! You could always wash them as you would fabric that you are preparing for dyeing (which removes oils, sizing, etc.) basically wash it in the hottest water possible using special detergents
then you could wash it in whatever detergent you would normally use.

While going organic with everything is a nice thought, it isn't always feasible and being the Mom you have just as much say as he does in what your child wears, he really shouldn't be trying to make you feel guilty. I'd be really ******!!

Thanks for the suggestion on washing with the special detergent, i'm not sure he will go for it though.... He's been doing a lot of research and everythign he reads says that the chlorine used to dye the cotton an't be washed out and just constantly leaches out of the clothes producing fumesChat Icon Chat Icon

I'm probably goign to try and make a compromise with him that we do strictly organic, like he wants the first 8-12 weeks to transition her into life out of the womb but after that no way.... Seriously... I'm a freaking granola bar already what the heck else does he want from me???? Chat Icon

It is so hard and so EXPENSIVE to be 100% organic. He is going to have to get over it. You can wash the clothes in organic detergent.

Just a question - what are you guys doing about diapers?

I 100% guarantee once you give HIM the job of sorting and returning/rebuying everything - he'll change his tune.

Sorry, but why does HE get to dictate while YOU have to do all of the work to accomodate ??
If it's not equally important to YOU, then I'd tell my DH he can do it himself -

We are cloth diapering..... we are lucky we have a diaper service around us that will wash the inserts and they don't use bleach ......The dipaers are cleaned using SCALDING hot water and go through like 5 different loads and then are tested for bacteria....... SO totally clean.

I don't have a problem with that... I was going to do that not just for babys health but for the enviroment as well....

If I tell him to do it he will just bring everythign to once upon a child and take $30 for all of it an call it even......

That's why i'm sorting through all of it to try and get the most back I can....

He is usually really good about not pushing me to do one thing or another... but with this he's INSANE!!!

Thats cool. I'm asking because I want to do cloth diapers also, but I am having a hard time convicing DH. I think we are going to use g diapers when the twins get big enough.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Is he usually like this generally when it comes to things like this? Just to give you another perspective- it might just be his way of mentally preparing for the baby. Maybe he's feeling anxious in general. Maybe you could try to talk to him during a calm moment?

Being organic all of the time would be wonderful, but as others said it's crazy expensive. And what about your clothes and furniture around the house? Your baby is going to be exposed to all sorts of things...I'm sure you know this already though. Good luck. I think we all have our own ways of preparing for the baby. Chat Icon

He isn't usually crazy like this..........I've had a rough pregnancy, we though we were loosing the baby at 12 weeks so its been a bit rough. His idea is that he wants to do the VERY BEST for her and if the very best means to dress her in all organic and chemical free to reduce her exposire to chemicals then that is what he wants to do......He is so paranoid that she is ok...

I've been freaking out this week about labor/delivery (I am having a homebirth) I wonder if this is his way of freaking out......

It's just so frustrating.....

ETA: I am an asthmatic and I have a lot of chemical sensitivities and they have been magnified even more byt hte pregnancy so maybe he thinks she is just as sensitive and wants to make sure we don't make her sick....Chat Icon

Re: Ughh DH Is driving me CRAZY!!!!!

There's a point where enough is enough, and you aren't getting any more benefits....

Like a PP mentioned, EVERYTHING off-gasses.

I hope you have a 50 year old car, because anything newer will be off-gassing still. A new carseat will be off-gassing for the life of the seat. Basically all safety items will be leaching chemicals (ironic, I know.... Chat Icon ). Unless you painted your entire house with non-VOC paint recently, the walls are probably still off-gassing. They do that for a year or more. As do carpets and many hardwood floors.

Organic cotton clothing is not naturally fire-resistant. It is considered "fire resistant" if it is snug, to prevent air pockets. Even snug clothes have plenty of air pockets.....

Basically, my point is, that it is absolutely great to be as green as is reasonably practical (I personally spent $$ having the entire house painted with no-VOC paint, have corn-based carpet, got bamboo flooring from a sustainably harvested, non-VOC glued source, etc, etc...), but your DH is well into the "diminishing returns" area. He is spending money for DC on things that don't really benefit DC anymore, instead of using that money for other things....

Tell DH to be aware of chemicals, but relax and enjoy your PG and your DC, otherwise the obsession will wind up having him too upset to enjoy either one of you.

Re: Ughh DH Is driving me CRAZY!!!!!

Can I ask a genuine question?
And I'm NOT trying to be snarky or anything, but I am really curious -

I understand the reasons for doing things organic for baby - but, YOUR clothing is not organic ........and you (and many others) are going to obviously be holding this baby close to you/them on a regular basis - People wear perfumes, use non organic hair products etc etc. -

It just seems like there has to come a PRACTICAL point where 'normal life' kind of gets in the way of the good intentions .........

Am I just being cynical? Is there a resolution for this that I'm not seeing?

I understand what you are saying..... While the baby will be held by people not wearing organic stuff and use non-organic products he feels that if 90% of her body is covered in organic clothing that is less of her skin that is going to come in contact with chemicals.

I think what has him freked out the most is a few articles he read, I think it was Carter's tagless baby onesies that were recalled or had a warning on them because they were giving babies 2nd degree burns on their skin...... He is more concerned with a "gentle transition" in the first 8-12 weeks of life and minimizing her exposure as much as possible.

As for perfumes etc.....I have a lot of chemical sensitivities so for the most part our families don't wear perfume stuff around me, it give me an instant asthma attack.....

He knows she is going to be exposed to a lot of stuff that we CAN'T control and he feels since he CAN control this that the less exposure the better......Chat Icon

Maria, I gotta say that its kinda cute how involved he is on this one! Most hubbies (mine included) could care less about this kinda thing! Brian has left pretty much every decision up to- what to register for, what to do about vaccines and finding a pediatrican , whether I want to BF or not, etc.. On the other hand I could see where it can become a PITA!

Hope you guys can figure this out! Good Luck! (sorry I have no words of wisdom, not something I'll prob ever have to deal with)Chat Icon

I know he means well and is nervous/scared....he's just driving me bananas!

Re: Ughh DH Is driving me CRAZY!!!!!

I am pretty strict with the organics, and I have come to the conclusion that the sheets, mattress and towels/washcloths are probably the most important to keep organic. That is when the skin is the most vulnerable, so it makes the biggest difference.

As for all the clothes having to be organic, it will be nearly impossible to make that happen unless you are making them yourself.Chat Icon

Washing the clothing in the organic detergent helps too. Honestly as long as the materials are natural, most of the chemicals wash out over time.
