UGH! THis blows!
I have a judgement on my credit for unpaid taxes to the state.
Apparently I was supposed to call them to make payment arrangements and I didn't.
They put a judgement on our file!
I made the payment arrangements now but unless I ask them to vacate the judgement, it will stay on there!
I worked so hard to maintain excelent credit. I feel like all of my hard work is for nothing.
I would like to pay it off but can't right now.
any advice is appreciated.

Re: UGH! THis blows!
I would ask them if they can take the judgement off your credit report (not just mark it as paid), if you pay off the debt right away.
Yes you mentioned you don't have it, but if you can get them to agree to completely remove it, it might be beneficial to borrow the money from another source (like a 0% credit card) to get that taken off your report.
If they won't take it off your report even if you pay, i'd just let it sit there.

I am incredibly sorry this happened to you. It happened to me in the 90's. I had a judgment against me for taxes back in the 90's. Even though I had a payment plan going, it stayed on my report, even after I paid it off, for 7 years. Sux.

It was an oversight..nothing more..I didn't call, I wasn't sure I had to.
How devastating will it be to our credit?
I could do the 0%..I have an offer but will my credit support it now. It was in the high 700s before.

Re: UGH! THis blows!
Is it a judgment or a lien?
I have heard though that NY state tends not to respond to credit bureau disputes after the lien has been satisfied in full, which can result in getting it deleted.
In NYS, tax liens can report for the full 7 from the date it was satisfied, not the date the lien was entered. If it's unsatisfied, it can remain on indefinitely

It's going to hurt for a bit. Paid or not, just having a public record hurts. As time goes by, it'll hurt less, but expect your credit to take a hit. Any good credit you have will help minimize the damage. It's impossible to say how much it will hurt, numberwise though. FICO's score calculators don't take paid/unpaid into account, although an underwriter for a major loan like a mortgage would consider that...... ditto for card applications, usually their computer systems are set up to look for public records and possibly deny for that regardless of your score. If you're denied credit (card, loan, etc), you can always ask for reconsideration at which point it's usually reviewed by an actual person.

Judgement.
I could ask for the judgement to be vacated if I write a letter but I'd better be prepared to pay it in full if I ask for that.
I'm considering the options.
DH just got a job and was out of work for a while..we're a bit depleted.
