UGH Recommendation ettiquette vent
Dear people on earth, When asked for a recommendation, please only refer me to someone who fits the criteria I have explained, or someone who you used and were exceptionally pleased with. please don't simply tell me names and numbers because you know them. i could do that myself by looking in a phone book.
ETA- this looks really mean and nasty- but as a new handyman special homeowner, I have had countless bad recommendations which have eaither screwed us up, or wasted our time, and it's getting very very frustrating. And i just want to cry about it.

Well you should FM the person that gave you the recommendation so that they are informed not to recommend these people anymore.
I know I would like to know if someone I recommended did not pan out for someone so that I do not recommend them anymore.

Oh, no- sorry not on the boards, just in general. I knew that looked mean... ETA- like, friends and family and in laws and co workers- they hear you need someone for something, and they're like- oh- use my guy.
Forget it- I'm just mean. I'm PMS ing and tired, and I spend all my time spackling.

I feel you, I am in the middle of a whole house renovation, so I have had a couple of wackos show up on recommendation of some friends. I have some good people I am working with if you need some recommendations of some people that someone actually used.
It is tough hang in there, but it will all be worth it at the end. Trust me I am at the end and can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

ITA agree with this vent. One of my pet peeves is calling people for an estimate and them not calling back. HEY, you don't want my business I can look someplace else. It drives me crazy.

Re: UGH Recommendation ettiquette vent
When someone says "so and so was great!", I ask why. Specifically, what made them great, rather than just good - for doing their job.
To me, someone who does their job, that they get paid for, is good. It's only when there is something special about them that I would consider them great.
Is it rude to question someone on a recommendation? I don't know. But I don't care either, because I (you) will be the one paying the consequences for any screw-ups - not the person who recommended them.
I hope whatever it is, it gets worked out for the better. And no, I don't think what you said was b*tchy. You're obviously in a bad spot because you trusted people and I'm sorry for that.
