ugh - infant insert in car seat
is it totally necessary to have one? we have the chicco keyfit30, used it with our son who is 2.5
i cannot find our infant insert (head or body) so I bought one, the Summer Infant Snuggler but DD HATES it, screams, sweats. I took it out and she was much happier but I am not sure she is secure enough? She is about 9lbs, one month old tomorrow. She is strong, has pretty good neck control but I worry she isn't big enough to be in there without the extra support?
Has anyone had an infant in a carseat without that insert? Is there a rule about it? Any idea where I can get one that isn't so bulky or any suggestions on a brand?

We took ours out pretty early on too. DD always had really good head control and she also hated that thing. Made her sweaty.

We never used ours. The hospital made us remove it when DS was being discharged. They rolled up receiving blankets and put those on both sides of him.

Same here. The nurse said this was safer, but forget her reasoning as to why. This is what we did until he was bigger.

I took out the body support that came with the our seat very early. We used the head support until she was too tall for it. I know I checked the manual to see what was recommended.

The only inserts they say to use are the ones that come with the seat because those are the only ones safety tested with the seat. That could be why the hospital said no.
OP- I have an older cicco (22) and the insert only goes to 11 pounds. If you're concerned about her head you can use a rolled up blanket as the OP suggested or they sell head supports that we used with ds that look like small stuffed bananas

If it didn't come with the seat, it shouldn't be used. Some nurses don't like any inserts and will take them out, but if they came with the seat, they have been tested and fit properly. They shouldn't move, push the head forward etc so they shouldn't be an issue.
Aside from the fact that aftermarket inserts are not tested with the seat for crashes, the insert may push the head forward and for a newbie that isn't good since it restricts their breathing. It also may move and shift since it doesn't fit properly.
If you can't find the insert, it's really not a problem so long as the harness fits appropriately. Some seats (like many convertibles, and the Chicco Keyfit) use them to help get a better fit for teeny weeny newborns/preemies.
If you want to provide more support to keep them straight, tightly rolled receiving blankets along their sides, under the arms, are find. Aftermarket accessories are not safe, even the benign looking ones that are just head supports. Because the support is made for many seats, not a specific one, it can slip behind the baby's head and the cushion can push the head forward.

We couldn't find ours for DS 2 for awhile so I rolled up receiving blankets and it worked just fine.
