Typical awake/sleep time for 5-6 week olds

Just wondering how long your 5-6 week old usually stays awake for during the day.

Right now, I feel like my DD is still only waking to eat. During the day when she wakes up from a nap, we can usually only get 10-20 minutes of good awake time with her before she starts to cry to eat. And then once she starts eating, she always falls right to sleep when she is finished. We never have a feeding where she stays awake afterward. So basically with the 15 minutes of awake time plus the feeding time, she only has about 45 minutes every three hours that she is even awake.

Is this still normal for this age, or is she still sleeping too much? Is your child staying awake after feedings? I don't know how to get her to do this and be in a good mood.

DD is 4 weeks old today, and her awake/sleep time is totally random. she will sometimes be awake for several hours at a time, and then other times she will sleep ALL day and barely even wake up for feedings.

i think it's normal for infants at this age to sleep for most of the day... Chat Icon

Let her sleep as much as she needs to at this age....as the weeks go on she will definitely be awake more between feedings

DS is 6 weeks and awake most of the day. He generally sleeps now from 11PM to 6 or 7AM, and is up til 3 or 4PM, when he takes a nap, then up til 7 or 8 when he may take a half hour nap, which is it til 11PM.

Re: Typical awake/sleep time for 5-6 week olds

When my daughter was that age, she was basically only awake to eat. There was not much awake time between feedings. It was basically:

Wake up
Bottle
Sleep 3/4 hours
Wake
Botle
Sleep 3/4 hours...etc...

It's normal. At that age they need alot of sleep.

For us somewhere around the 8/9 week mark she started having longer stretches of awake time

Even now at 6 months old, she can't go longer than 2 hours before needeing a nap.
