TV when sick
Do you let your little ones watch more TV when they're sick? I'm pretty anal about TV time. Kieran is 2.5 and usually watches anywhere from 1-3 half hour shows a day. He's been sick since Saturday- fever, bad chest congestion and cough. He's such a trooper but he's not been himself. He just doesn't have the energy to play like he usually does. So I've been letting him watch more TV than usual and feeling a bit guilty. Just wondering if others do the same!

When my kids are sick, all of the rules usually go out the window. They watch TV, eat what they have the desire for, often sleep with us or I will sleep in their room, etc. Whatever makes them more comfortable at the time is the way to go for me.

I agree. (Though we don't have many rules to begin with)

Me too! It also happens sometimes when they're not sick.

Why would you feel guilty? What do you think could happen from watching extra TV? I mean, it's not like there are toxic waves penetrating their eyes or something!

Re: TV when sick
I am not very strict about TV. I don’t find it to be a problem. However, if she’s sick, she isn’t watching TV. She’s like me. We are both either sick, I mean REALLY sick or we’re sick with a quick recovery day/night stuff.
So if she’s truly sick she’s sleeping it off, taking baths, I read to her and try to feed her, try to put her outside for some sunshine and fresh air (yeah old school). Generally she’s in her room, my room, in the bath, kitchen or on the porch. Hubby will let her watch TV but also finds it hard to do since she’s not really watching it all. She and I get sick, sick, we sleep. Like hibernation for repair.
If she’s day/night where she wakes up with a fever and maintains the fever but is otherwise a-ok, then I still take her outside for air and sun and keep her contained as much as I can doing crafts and toned down stuff. I keep her hydrated and close to home. TV just feels to me like it drains her somehow, encourages her to sit in her ‘sickness’ and wallow in misery. I will let her watch TV but even when I do, it bores her and she gets upset and frustrated at being sick so it never lasts long.

Re: TV when sick
Thanks ladies, I feel better! We are very into consistency and we do have rules, so I worry about breaking them. But you're right, when he's sick, he needs what makes him happy.

Yes I know that, I'm not from the 60's. There are plenty of studies about the negative effects of too much television. You can't be that clueless, can you? The AAP recommends no more than 1-2 hours of TV a day.

Re: TV when sick
Yes I let my DD watch more tv when she is sick. We cuddle on the couch and relax.
On average I let my DD watch 1-3 shows a day. (each show is about 30 minutes) But when sick I do let her watch more so she can relax.

TV when sick
I let her do/eat whatever she wants whe she is sick. If some Elmo and ice pops make her happy, then that's what we do.

You are calling ME clueless but YOU can't be that clueless to take the recommendation that literally!
I mean, I read your op and thought it was a joke. FM me your address and I'll send over a few crossword puzzles from the Sunday times for your sick 2 1/2 year old kid to do since "the AAP recommends no more than 1-2 hours of TV a day".

I apologize, I should not have said that. It was a snap reaction because I really felt like you were ridiculing me. Though, I can safely say when the AAP recommends something, it's not meant to be taken figuratively. Is there another way to take that recommendation that I'm somehow missing?

IMO it's a guideline for general use. I don't think any pediatricians would suggest that a deviation while your kids are stuck with fevers on the couch would be harmful. The only "bad" thing I can possibly think of is that for a few days once they're better they may expect more TV. However, I think if your policy has been strict for a while, then they would easily get back into their typical routine- like kids staying up late once in a while for a special event.

I agree, I don't think most pediatricians would take issue with a little extra tv when sick. I got the impression from your post that you didn't see anything negative about TV. Again, I apologize for misinterpreting.

Re: TV when sick
I think the key concept to remember is, the definition of "what's best for the child" is different when a child is sick vs. healthy.
On a normal day, sitting a child in front of the TV all afternoon is not what's best for the child. I'm sure all of us would agree on that. However, a kid who's lethargic from being sick probably would benefit more from the restfulness of just sitting on the sofa for a while, instead of being urged to get up and do something more "constructive".
Just like a kid getting over a stomach bug might live on jello and toast for a couple days. Is that a proper diet on a typical day? No way. But for a kid who can't keep anything else down, it's what's best at the time.
