Tummy Time

My doctor says tummy time is very important but my 11 week old hates it. He cries within a minute of putting him down. I've tried the playmat, the couch and the changing table. Any suggestions?

Re: Tummy Time

My son haaaaaated it also. Don't worry too much though bc he's now two and turned out A-OK.

And I kept trying and trying. His opinion never changed.

So I spoke to the ped about some alternatives -- I used to prop a pillow or a wedge under to help him enjoy it more. It helped only a little. The ped gave some other suggestions on how to help strengthen the head and neck. There are some alternatives you can look up online. But everything was similar to tummy time and he wasn't having it.

The good news is he developed normally. He wasn't behind or anything. And by five or six months was sitting up and holding his head up and once he started crawling he never looked back. I think bc his head was always so large (lol) it was uncomfortable for him to do tummy time. He used to whine and cry and kvetch. And he was not a complainer! So it must have just felt like he's trying to hold up this bowling ball head Chat Icon

And once he could sleep on his belly, once it was safe to, he LOVED sleeping on his belly. He was a great back sleeper too. But I thought bc he didn't like tummy time he wouldn't like sleeping on his belly but he did. Thankfully!!

Tummy Time

My DS would only do tummy time on my chest or propped up with the boppy.

DS hated it, too. I just tried to do it for that minute, until he showed he hated it. He rolled early and crawled early, so don't worry about it. DD didn't mind tummy time at all, and rolled slightly earlier but not significantly earlier. So my point is, do it as long as the baby will tolerate it.

My DD hated it too. We started DS right away, literally when we got back from the hospital, and he has much better head control at his age than DD.

Just do it for a couple of mins at a time multiple times a day. It's ok if they cry. It will add up.

MY DS HATES it. He is 7 months old and sitting up great. Almost crawling, he can scoot backwards. Just try your best. He didn't hate it so much if he did it on my belly.

Re: Tummy Time

I should also point out that when I was worried and said to my ped that he hates tummy time, my ped said: don't feel so bad! If he doesn't do it (that much or at all) just remember, when you were a baby there was no such thing as tummy time and look how nicely you hold your head up! LOL. She made me laugh.

My DDs' hated it too. They can almost sit up unassisted and they roll from tummy to back and back to tummy. AND they still hate being on their tummies.

My DS hated it with a passion so i didnt force it. Then he couldnt roll, and had gross motor delays. Once he started crawling everything else came typically. But i always thought -- hmmm, maybe if i did more tummy time. Sigh. Who knows!

Yeah my older ds was like this... he cried constantly as a newborn/infant so I never pushed tummy time very much & he had a lot of gross motor delays. But, I actually think this had nothing to do with it & he would have had these delays no matter what. Now at 2 he's fine.
