trying to wean off afternoon bottle-need help

Son is almost 13 monts. takes 3 bottles - morning, night and one around 4pm after nap. I'm trying to eliminate that one. Tried giving milk in straw cup(which he is quite capable of drinking from) but he only drinks about 3 oz. Prob. is, I'm not sure what food to offer him that will fill him up the way 7 oz. of milk will. Even though he has 7 oz of milk, he'll eat dinner 2 hrs. later. Big boy. I don't want to have to put him in the chair for another meal right before dinner- is this wrong? welcome to suggestions..thanks

My DS is only 10 months old but I'll try Chat Icon

If you just want to drop the bottle but still want him to drink the 7oz of milk in the sippy after his nap, try not giving him the bottle. I know you said he'll only drink 3 oz in the sippy but maybe if you don't give in and just use the sippy, he'll eventually (next day or the following) drink out of the sippy once he knows there is no other option.

As for the food, are you giving him enough proteins for lunch? Those tend to fill you up more. Babies, even a 13 month old have tiny tummies which is why they eat so often. If he drinks all 7 oz of milk, maybe give him a snack along with the milk. Some cookies, cheese fruit, etc. Oh, and have you tried buying him a new, extra special sippy that can only be used for the afternoon milk, maybe give it a cool name? Hope my ideas help.

thanks so much for your comments. I didnt' give the afternoon bottle the last 4 days and he didnt' seem to care. He only drank about 3 oz from the straw cup, had a little snack and was fine til dinner. I guess he just enjoyed sucking on the bottle, but really wasn't thirsty! thanks again : )
