I know that your fingers shrink when it's cold out, but lately my rings are looser than average. sometimes I catch them starting to slide right off my finger Chat Icon

how much do you think it would cost to re-size 2 platinum bands? Chat Icon

I think new molds have to be made- can't you not cut platinum?

maybe get those balls put on the inside?

Mine are very lose right now also!

If you are willing to get those sizing beads put in, then it is not very expensive. They will use platinum, so that may add to the fee, but it is not a large quantity of platinum.

yea, the balls may be a good idea. I think I lost some weight recently. so add that to the cold and they're seriously loose on me.

thanks

My jeweler resized my e-ring which is platinum when I lost a bunch of weight. He charged us $50. and it took about a half hour. He did it right in front of us. It also depends on the style of your ring & how the diamonds are situated, etc.

But the ring turned out good as new, he polished it & it looked like a brand new ring, you couldn't see a seam or anything.

that's interesting b/c my jewler told me that if I want to reset my stone in plat- that he would have to make a mold- b/c you can't cut it to resize after

you can cut thru white gold

I am going to do some more research on this

I'm not sure what he did, he had a special machine & it took about 30 minutes. My jeweler is in the diamond district. He said its not a great idea to do more than once though.

I'm obviously NOT a jeweler but it looked like he took a tiny portion of the band off and then reconnected it together, but as I said there was no indication of the seam or the change at all.

I resized mine and it was no charge. I went to my jeweler.

Re: trying to decide if I should re-size my rings

You can cut platinum. My mom's wedding rings had to be cut off before she had surgery. I had her band repaired and sized for me and I now wear it. You can't tell it was cut, but I have a knife edge band, not an eternity band. My e-ring, which was purchased new and is platinum, was also sized for me after DH bought it.

My rings are also loose in the winter, but I didn't resize them because they swell enough in the summer that I think they would be too tight.

Re: trying to decide if I should re-size my rings

I believe that titanium is the only metal that is used in jewelry that can't be cut.

With any metal, if you are resizing by a lot and it has diamonds, it may have an effect on the security of the stone(s).

My grandfather was a jeweler and now I wish he was here so I could ask him more about this. Chat Icon

are you talking about an eternity style ring? if so, then he is right. once it's been made, it cannot be sized, but it's because of the setting, not the platinum.

platinum can be cut and sized, but it costs a lot more than gold.

platinum definitely can be cut. DH's wedding band needed to be resized after we bought it and before the wedding.
