trying not to freak out
I took DD to the doctor for her cold today. Turns out she has a double ear infection. I feel awful that I didn't bring her in sooner. Then the doctor says that she wants to discuss DD's bloodwork that we had done last week. (For her one year checkup)
Turns out her white blood cell count is elevated. The doctor was going to call me today, but I called her first. The doctor said that the levels are most likely increased from the infection in her ears, but we need to retest her in 3 weeks (after antibiotics) to be sure.
I am trying so hard not to fear the worst, but my FIL died of leukemia (and I know there are different types) and I can't stop worrying. The doctor never said the word leukemia to me, but she did show concern, and really wants the follow up done.
Has this ever happened to any of you? It is most likely from the ear infection right?

Re: trying not to freak out
If I'm not mistaken, dont white blood cells fight infections? If so, it would make sense that they were elevated due to the ear infection. Try not to worry, although I know it's hard...

I am sure she will be fine. It's probably just from the ear infections.

Re: trying not to freak out
My brother died of Leukemia, so if I heard that news I would freak out too!
Just try to remember that DD has an ear infection, and that is probably the reason . The increased production of white blood cells is helping to fight the infection. As parents, it's very easy to think the worst and dwell on it.
Sending
and your way!

Re: trying not to freak out
An elevated WBC is mostly due to the infection.
I would be concerned with a decreased WBC because of the inability to fight disease and infection.
I know how nervous you must be. DS had WBC issues this summer in his blood test but it rectified itself.
The ped may just want to do more tests to make sure nothing else is going on.
It is mentally is exhausting. Hang in there!

Re: trying not to freak out
Thank you so much! I know that it is most likely due to her ear infections, but boy and I scared! I am just going to keep praying for the best. It is going to be a long 3 weeks to wait before her next round of bloodwork.

Re: trying not to freak out
I am feeling a little bit better. Dh called the ped to go over the bloodwork since he wasn't at the appt. today. The ped reassured him that the counts are almost definitely raised due to the fact that she is fighting infection. I am going to do my best to think positive. I will update you all after the next tests.
