Trust Issues and babysitting
Does anyone have family or friends that always want to babysit but you have trust issues with that person and try to avoid having them watch your kid? Have you ever come straight out and told the person what your issue is with them or do you try to avoid the conversation entirely?
I have a few friends who don't let certain people watch their kids but i never thought to ask them if those people know what their issue is with them.

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
There are certain people I would def. trust to babysit my son, and certain people that I would not. I would just avoid it as much as possible - and try not to go out if my "trusted" babysitters were busy.

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
our really good friends who we are very close with are always offering to babysit.
Normally i have no issues with family/friends with babysitting my kids at all. I jump on free childcare, but when we brought DD home, their first question was DO i have to change her diapers? How do you do that?
After that, we decided it would be best for them to sit AFTER both girls are out of diapers or when both of them are sleeping

I wish my issue was as simple as that!

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
Very few people have watched DS. My parents watch him 99.9% of the time. Now that he is a little older I would consider letting a few other family members watch him but it would depend on how long we were going to be gone. And the people who I would let watch him it's not necessarily that I dont trust them, it's that they dont know him well enough or his schedule.
But hey, I can always watch Colin for you and he can play with TJ!

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
Well, its no so much a trust issue, but my SIL asked about being Jordana's nanny. I told her that I would never hire anyone who smoked to babysit my child. I knew she woudl never smoke in front of Jordy, but she always smelled of smoke. I just didn't want my daughter breathing that everyday.
As for trust, I would just say, you are so sweet- but I wouldn't want to impose like that.

This is how I feel also. I know my children would be perfectly fine if my IL watched them for a long period of time, but they don't know my kids well enough and their schedule to make me feel totally comfortable. MIL is not lovey dovey and cannot soothe the baby. They would be fine, but I would worry. They do things different than I do also.

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
We avoid the issue entirely. If they offer we come up with reasons why we don't want to go out.
ETA: In our case it's a safety issue. There have been a few incidents where we were in the house but left the room that made us uncomfortable.

Yes, and because of the relationship it cannot be discussed with this person at all. We have to pick and choose when they are exposed to DC but let them feel they are still involved. It sux and is hard.

That sounds like what we are going to have to do!! I know i am going to offend this person, but i have no choice. The safety of my son is all that should matter, right?

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
DH and I have total trust issues... honestly, I will only trust my SIL and BIL and my sister to watch DD. My SIL is amazing with her and she is one of the few people that I dont feel like I need to worry, its funny because she doesnt even have kids yet (she is pregnant now and is gonna be an awesome mommy), My inlaws no way..they are wayyyyyyyyy too nervous and need someone to watch/help them change a diaper ... but anyway... to answer your question... only SIL and BIL, and my sister.:

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
I don't not trust anyone, friends or family members but I don't trust my son to behave in a manner that would befit babsitters. Ie, not waking up in the evening before we got home....
He always seems to wake in the evening, and at the moment he isn't sleeping through the night well...

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
I have my preferences of people I feel most confortable with, but when people offer to babysit that I'm not that confortable with, I will make my plans later so I can put DS to bed first.

Re: Trust Issues and babysitting
I feel horrible saying this but I dont trust MIL to watch my son what-so-ever. I even keep my eyes glued to him when she is holding/playing with him. She means NO harm and is so nice and always giving. But I have see her not pay close attention to my SIL's twins and they have gotten hurt, almost choked on bread she has given them and about 17 years ago when her eldest grandson was young and she was watching him he almost drowned in the pool. Luckily for my nephew my husband came home from work and saved him in time. MIL was doing laundry instead of watching him
