true or not true?

so I had a checkup today and our midwife, who is great, said the baby's heartrate sounded fast, so she thought it might be a girl. now mind you, we are not finding out, this is just her guess/wives-tale.

I guess my question is do you think its true? Have you heard of this? Was it true for you???

My doctor told me it's totally not true. He's had boys with fast heartbeats and girls with slow.

Re: true or not true?

my dr told me that is a myth. the heartrate depends on whether the baby is awake or asleep. Although mine is always high and I am having a Chat Icon ...so maybe it is a little true!!

I never asked the heartrate on either child.

My friend's midwife commented on the fast heartrate too. She was told that it indicated it was a girl but she had a boy. So not true for her.

I can't remember if my doctor or tech told me this was false.

Dr H told me it has more to do with the mother's heartrate, since it will double that. I have a very low heart rate (66 BPM) so the baby's heartbeat being over 140 is actually high if you go by the doubling method. (Did that make sense? Chat Icon )

Re: true or not true?

my dr said there is a 50% chance of it being right.

At my last appt (17 weeks) the dr guestimated the heart rate was 160....we saw boy parts

My Chat Icon heartrate was 173 on Sunday...so that shows right there it is just an old wives tale. Sorry!!

Re: true or not true?

Who knows....My doc said between her and the other 2 docs on the office they've been 75% right when they guess the sex by the heartrate. During my last 3 visits, 2 of the docs in the office told me it sounded like a girl. When I went for my 1st sono, they told me it looked like a boy but couldn't confirm. I'd love a girl this time around, but I'm not getting my hopes up based on the HR.

Re: true or not true?

for my first it was right - he was always under 160 and usually under 140

but my midwife just told me last week that all babies have fast heartrates in the first trimester - but she still doesn't think it is an indicator later on.

Re: true or not true?

Mainly it is an old wives tale, but I have a friend and a cousin who swear that their girls were over 160 and their boys were around 140ish.

My Chat Icon has always been around 140-150 range
