Truck Drivers-Pet peeve!
Why is it so hard to actually read the signs that say NO TRUCKS ON PARKWAYS!??!
I love when the news say "misplaced tractor trailer"
From Newsday- "Trucks are not allowed on parkways in New York. However, NYSDOT officials estimate there are about 15 so-called "incursions" each month -- resulting in about five bridge strikes per month.
Drivers are issued violation summonses in such cases. And, in cases where there is damage as a result of a bridge strike, drivers and their trucking companies are usually fined -- and charged with the repair costs."
Am I the only one who gets so annoyed by this happening all the time?!

I completely agree - my dad is a truck driver and he said drivers from out of state hate driving in NY because they aren't familiar with the roads and that's when things like that happen. Its usually out of state drivers where this happens

Double ditto. My father is a retired truck driver who for years drove the roads of NYC and LI. He says it's inexperience and lack of knowledge. Even today, if he is driving around (in a car) he notices low elevation signs re: bridge ahead and will point out that if he were driving a truck he wouldn't be able to take that particular road. As someone who has only driven a car, I don't even notice these signs. My father also finds it exotic to be able to drive the parkways. After years of years of driving on the LIE, he actually prefers it to the parkways.

Its usually out of state drivers where this happens FBIL is a truck driver as well. I am pretty sure he told me about a map or a GPS program or something that will route him ONLY on truck-passable roads. Even the weight limit roads are a problem for him, since he drives an 18-wheeler.
Misplaced......I love that phrase.
I do have to say in NY we are really mean when we pass the drivers though. People point, honk, laugh, curse, etc at the drivers as they pass them stuck under the bridges. We are ruthless!

I understand they might not be familiar with the roads... but there are plenty of signs BEFORE the exit to a parkway that say NO TRUCKS..

I agree! My husband gets annoyed but he always feels bad for them...most likely that driver is going to either lose their job or get in A LOT of trouble being that he just cost his boss a ton of money!!

Over the summer a truck got stuck on the FDR because he GPS system (which was made for trucks) had told him to take the FDR. So, unfortunately, GPS isn't always very helpful.

Re: Truck Drivers-Pet peeve!
As I am in the transportation business, I can tell you alot of the time it is b/c the drivers don't read or speak english and therefore can't read the signs.
I have had this happen with 2 different trucking companies I deal with in NJ.

ITA! Just a thought, but maybe the DMV tests should be in english only!

You would think that this would be the obvious answer. Don't get me started! We'll have to pull up a chair, munchies and and a drink if I have that tirade.

The signs... they are super tiny!!!!
I moved to NY from another state and I am glad I stayed on LIE. I was "Tempted" to go on the parkways and did not realize until later the heigth restriction.
I am sure most of the those trucks are NOT locals. They know!
But I can tell you that the signs are really not that obvious if you don't know your way around and just glad you even see the "N" for "Northern State Parkway" in the middle of tree leaves or behind a tree. Never mind the heigth restriction while you are ALREADY on the parkway or the ramp.

Re: Truck Drivers-Pet peeve!
I can't get upset - I'm sure they don't do it to try to save time...I'm sure they get in tons of trouble and they wish knew not to go on it.
Ny driving is hard and like Sophie said, the signs are tiny. Imagine having to watch all the crazy drivers who cut trucks off all the time.
I know when we drove x-country in a rental truck, I hit a sign on a Denny's! the cab is lower than the trailer, so it's not super obvious to the driver that it will happen.
I'm sure this has messed up his T-giving and will be sitting in his stomach the whole week.

I agree. And the reality is a lot of these guys (and gals) get their assignments the morning or day of the delivery and have little to no time to prepare. The dispatchers back in the day would help out as well, but since the industry overall is changing I am sure those days are dying as well.
