Trouble Leaving the House Anyone?
DS LOVES to go out, just about anyplace will do, but when it comes time to leave the house he dawdles and runs away from me if I need to do anything before we go like apply sunscreen or change his clothes. And if I grab him and try to put on clothes, shoes, etc., he gets wild and squirms like crazy to the point where I can't put things on him. If we don't have to be somewhere at a set time, I let him run off a little steam, then try to distract him, then put the clothes on, but it's a problem when we need to go somewhere by a set time. Even if I pad our getting ready time, we still seem to be late frequently.
So, any tips on getting your child out the door without a big meltdown from DC or you? I don't get it since he really does like going out, and once we are out of the house, his entire mood changes.

When I know we need to get out the door (for daycare, a scheduled activity/party) I put his sneakers on when I change his diaper so I don't need to get them on before we walk out the door.
Then, I usually tell him to go to the front door so we can see if we can find any birds/dogs outside b/c we're going out. He normally will run to the door and wait for me once I say that.
I've always tried letting him hold my keys for the car (letting him hit the remote) to excite him about going out the door.

Thanks, these are all good ideas. I'll try the door thing next time. Yesterday I had the worst time changing his diaper before we went to go get DH at the train--he had wet through his shorts, so I wanted to do it before we left. I was ready to walk out of the house with him naked to tell the truth.

You have to let him know who the boss is...be firm and stern everytime he starts to run around. etc. My son does the exact same thing...I just grab him and go to change him, while he is screaming his lungs out, I try to let him know where we're going and what we're going to do. That usually distracts him and we're good to go in no time.

I do this--he just laughs at me and gets more wound up like it's some game. The problem with this is it's almost impossible to change him then--he flails and rolls all over, and I have a hard time holding him down--he's strong. I should add he laughs every time DH or I speak to him in any kind of stern, serious voice, so I just don't find this is so effective for him.
I guess I'm trying to figure out how to calm him down enough or diveret him enough so we can go where we need to go if he needs changing, etc.
