Triple screeen vs. quadscreen question???

So I had my 16 wk appt last night where I anticipated getting the triple screen as this is what I read on here and in books. Well the nurse took blood and said it was for my quadscreen. I asked her do you just skip the triple screen here and go straight to the quadscreen and she said, basically, it's just another screening added on to your blood.

I thought the quadscreen was only done if your triplescreen results were questionable? My ultrascreen results were great, so I'm not worried something is wrong, and I guess I shouldn't complain about having an additional screening....

Have any of your dr. just done the quadscreen and skipped the triplescreen? Am I basically asking a dumb question here and should just not even think twice about it??Chat Icon

The quadscreen tests for the same things that the triple screen does, plus one more test.

quadscreen

So you are getting the triple screen, plus one more test.Chat Icon

Re: Triple screeen vs. quadscreen question???

Thanks, I figured this but then how come some it seems most drs give just a triple screen...and then a quadscreen, or am I wrong? Why not just give everyone a quadscreen right off the bat?

I just feel like I always read on here about ppl having their triplescreen appt only, and then some have a quadscreen? (maybe I'm confused Chat Icon )

I think it could have to do with a few factors.. but mostly on what your doctor feels you should have.

For me, I know my age dictates alot of what my Dr. orders for me.

Re: Triple screeen vs. quadscreen question???

Awww you are ok. I hate that they call these tests similar things. A quad screen is essentially the triple screen plus the afp test making it a test for 4 things. It is a newer all-in-one test so I think the terminology hasn't caught up yet. Drs almost always check for all of these 4 things but seem to call it different things. You wouldn't get the triple then the quad but some docs call it triple and afp separately. No worries - you didn't skip anything you just got the most current testing available where in some offices they might not have the technology yet. It gives the doc the most "full" picture they can get without doing an amnio or cvs. I received the same test with stellar ultrascreen results as well-my doc considers it part 2 of the ultrascreen that everyone gets if you opt for the ultrascreen.

That makes total sense! Yeah, some on here just call it an AFP too so it's true, all these different tests and names are so confusing, I guess I just want to make sure I'm getting what I'm supposed to be, so this all makes me feel better now. Thanks! Chat Icon
