Not to be a Debbie Downer, but what exactly is covered if a family member passes during vacation and you have to come home early?

it depends on the insurance plan you purchased. Before you buy it, you should get a copy of the agreement.

... and any reputable insurance provider will have a 24-hour toll free number that you can call and ask these kinds of questions. I suggest if you have a specific scenario that you are concerned about, give them a call.
