I think only if they want to check your cervix length in a more detailed manner.

not for me, just an external. they did check the cervix with the regular sono although im sure if they saw anything that looked abnormal i wouldve had an internal.

i only had external at 20w. the only transvaginal one i had was the first one at 6w to confirm pregnancy
