transitioning to whole milk & throwing up...

just wanted to get advice, a few weeks ago I began to start to transition DS onto whole milk, he will be one year old next week. I added about an ounce into his formula, and he seemed fine. I began to add a little bit more and lately it seems like he has been throwing up what looks like curdled milk. Could it be that I am adding more too quickly? I just wanted to get some of your experiences transitioning your DC onto whole milk and how long it took. I wasn't going to order more of his formula because I figured I would have him transitioned but now I am wondering if it is going to take a while to get him off of it.. thanks.

DD is going to be 1 on the 28th and she is already on whole milk. She actually transitioned fine. I did the same thing added more milk to forumla. I was actually concerned because when I did this with DS he was constipated. What formula is he on? The only thing I can think of is maybe the formual you use is to strong to mix with milk. We mixed it with similac advance.

Is he throwing up after every bottle with milk in it?

Did you call your ped? My first thought is a milk allergy.

What was your DS on before you transitioned?

DS threw up the first few times we gave him whole milk. I then started mixing it with the formula, gradually adding more milk than formula. I was worried that he was allergic but the Dr said he would have more of a reaction (diarrhea, rashes). I would say it took about 2 wks of mixing the milk and formula before we went with straight milk and he has been fine ever since. Good luckChat Icon

he is on alimentum, not officially diagnosed with a milk protein allergy, but when he was around 2 months ped told me to switch to that since he was very gassy... but when i spoke to the ped a few weeks ago, they said it was fine to mix whole milk with it which is why i am now confused...

my DS was on gentlease due to gas. Once I switched him to milk he was screaming from the gas and stomach cramps. Dr said to switch very slowly....I tried and it didn't work. I tried Lactose free and it worked fine.

Alimentum is lactose free so he may be having issues with the lactose. DS1 had problems with switching from Similac Sensitive - he would throw up and as we increased the amount he would have horrible gas pains at night. He wasn't officially diagnosed either but, at 3m he stopped being able to keep down Gentlease and refused Nutramigen or Alimentum so we went with lactose free and dealt with the gas (by not sleeping).

We tried Lactaid and it made a world of difference - we got some sleep and he didn't vomit.

We just transitioned him at 3 1/2 to 2% and had no issues, he grew out of it.

ETA - We could have tried sooner but, we didn't want to interfere with his sleeping since it had improved drastically.

Yea, my first thought was lactose intolerance, which is different from milk protein allergy, which is probably what the ped suspected at 2 months. I would talk to your ped about it.

DD had terrible rashes when we switched her to milk after being EBF. I read up on milk and how many people have bad reactions to it and how are bodies are actually not built to digest dairy. I was amazed at what I read. We now have her on almond and coconut and have had no issues since. Could be worth a shot trying to put your LO on another milk option.
