Transitioning to Milk

DS will be turning a year next month so in preparation for switching from formula to milk, I just wanted to see what others did when it came to transition time...

Did you go cold turkey? Did you start incrementally and gradually increase until it was all milk? Did you wait until the clock struck one year old (or after) or did you start transitioning in the weeks leading up to the first b'day?

TIA!! Chat Icon

Transitioning to Milk

she used to be super constipated at first so for us we took it slow. Replacing 2oz per day until she was at 100% within a week.

Transitioning to Milk

Started after her birthday. Did an ounce of milk at first mixed with 6oz of formula. Every day I increased the milk by half an ounce and decreased formula by half an ounce. Once you get to 4oz of milk they can take a full bottle of 6/7/8oz. I didnt do it cold turkey bc dd was coming off of alimentum.

Re: Transitioning to Milk

We did it over 3 days as our (and your!) dr recommended. He could have handled just switching but we didn't know that until after we did it obviously. But it was a quick and easy 3 days.

day 1 - 1/3 milk, 2/3 formula
day 2 - 2/3 milk, 1/3 formula
day 3 - all milk

we actually started our "day" with the last bottle of the night. He LOVED milk and still does. So he took to it with no problems at all, definitely seemed to like it better!

Dr wanted us to wait until 1 year visit. 1 year visit was delayed cause of a double ear infection on his 1st bday and a then a trip to aruba. So we started the transtion 2.5 weeks after his first bday.

We started at 11.5 months with 2 oz per bottle. Added 2 more oz a few days later. Then finally a full bottle of milk. We did a slow transition basically just to use up the formula we had in the house. Within a month DS was fully on milk. He had no issues.

We did it gradually...one ounce at a time. It took us about 6 weeks bc dd had tummy issues with the transition

I started giving him an ounce or two on its own at 10 months and just gradually increased the milk and decreased the formula - by 11 months he was completely on milk.

I didn't mix milk and formula - I gave them separately until he was drinking more milk than formula.

Re: Transitioning to Milk

We're just starting with DS2. We're going to do a few days of 4 oz formula with 2 oz milk. We started with his night bottle last night. His bday is tmrw. If he's fine with that then by Fri or Sat we'll do 4 oz of milk to 2 oz of formula. We should run out of formula by Sun or Mon and then that's it.

Transitioning to Milk

Started at 11 1/2 months and DD was super constipated. This went on for a week or two until she was normal again.

To help prevent it make sure DC drinks water and if it does get bad prune juice may help.

Re: Transitioning to Milk

I waited until right after DS turned 1 and pediatrician gave the green light. I purchased an organic milk and one feeding, I had him taste and he loved it. So I replaced that formula feeding with milk and he loved it. I then began putting milk in his fave cup and there was no turning back to formula or bottle. He took really well, very quick. I was prepared for really anything because you just never know. Good luck :)

Re: Transitioning to Milk

Cold turkey the week of his first birthday.

It's funny, he was actually so over the formula by that point. I think he would have stopped himself had I not stopped him that week!

But yeah, it was fine.
