Transition to a "big" bed
I know I dont have to worry about this now since I am only 9 1/2 weeks along, but I am thinking about anything but work right now. So DD will be 20 months when #2 is born. Ill probably keep DC #2 in my room till about 3 months. Im just thinking, do I need to buy another crib? Or can I just put rails on the full size bed I have in the spare bedroom and have it be DD's room? Is she too young? What has your experience been like?

Transition to a
My DD will be 23 months when DD2 is born, and we are putting her into a twin bed with rails. BUT, DD is still sleeping in our bed. I am buying her new furniture now for her big girl room (baby will go in her current room), and we are going to start the transition as soon as her room is ready so she is out of our bed before DD2 arrives, so DD will also be about 20 months when she goes into a bed.

We're in the process of doing almost the same thing. DD will be 22 mo when #2 arrives and we're moving her out of the nursery and into her "big girl" room. We will put the baby in her gender neutral nursery and bought all new girly furniture for DD. We have the furniture (a twin bed, bedside table and dresser) all set up in her new room and as soon as the mattress and rails come, she'll be moving into the twin bed. She is currently 20 mo and is SUPER excited about her new room. She gets so excited to show everyone her "big girl" room as she calls it and LOVES playing in there.
I'm not sure how much of this she really understands, but we keep telling her the baby will sleep in her old room and she will sleep in her big girl room. When we ask her if she wants to go "night night" in her big bed she says yes and dances around so excited. I don't think we'll have any problem with the transition, although that is yet to be seen.
I personally wouldn't buy a second crib but only you know what is right for your child.

Re: Transition to a "big" bed
DS 1 was in a full size bed at 20 months and did fine. We switched him because he was climbing in and out of his crib, so a bed was actually safer for him. DS 2 will be 3 in march and I have no intentions of transitioning him any time soon. He is perfectly content in his crib so I don't want to mess with it.

DS is 2.5 and still so not ready!
I'd wait and see. You can always buy a cheap crib (ikea) and convert it when the time comes.

Re: Transition to a "big" bed
we made the switch at 28 months and it was perfect but he probably could have done it earlier and been OK. at 28 months, he understood "no getting out of bed until mommy and daddy come"
he has been in his full size bed with rails on both sides for about 3 months and has not once tried to get out at night, in the morning or during a nap unless we go in
