transfer and grading

Start my new protocol stim meds on Wednesday. ER is planned on July 1st and Transfer on July 4th. Depending on the number of and quality embies Dr. wants to put back possibly 4...DH and I have talked it over and we are not willing to do that. DH wants to put back only 2 like last time, which failed. I could be talked into 3 if the fert report only has 3 graded so-so. Last time they called with the fert report but could only tell us how many not the grading. So how would I go about finding out the grading ahead of time? Is it a problem to let the doctor, which is not my RE because she doesn't do the procedures, know the day of when he gives us the grading that we want to change the number of embies transfered. For example, if he tells us we only have 3 but they are all rock stars that we say we only want to put back two and discard the other one...she said they will not freeze only one. Anyone have experience with this?

Re: transfer and grading

My advice is to be direct. My RE never gave me the exact grades. He just kept saying they were progressing a little slow, but showed good growth. After the failed cycle, I had a meeting with the RE. The embryos were actually of fair and poor quality - I was PISSED that he was not honest with us. He now said that for me he would tell me the grade before transfer if that would make me feel better. This is not common practice where I go, but I am paying $$$ so I believe I am entitled to know EVERYTHING about what is going on.

I am going for my transfer tomorrow and I know the exact grading of all my embryos! I think you have every right to know and should just ask. I can't imagine they would not tell you. I did not even ask, I was just told!

Best of luck to you...

Last cycle when the nurse called with the FERT report I asked the grading and she said she didn't have that information only the number that fertilized. I guess I'll let them know ahead of time that I expect to have that info ahead of time.

Definitely do that. It is your right to know, it may change your mind on how many you ultimately want to transfer! Also, it just gives you some piece of mind knowing! Ask the dr to call you after the report is in!

For me, I like being in control...knowing what I am faced with, good or bad. Its's how I deal! I could never not know!

Re: transfer and grading

I definitely knew the grading for all 3 of my IVF transfers.

I only do 5D transfers bc it is my understanding that the likelyhood of a 5D blast resulting in a pregnancy is much higher (according to my Dr. and my reserach) and since we have male IF factor a day3 wouldnt work for us.

I would call to speak with the Embryologist. There is a slight variation on how they grade and every office is different.

Only blasts get graded as far as I know in our RE office. We had AA,AA,AA,AB,AB,AC
Some girls said they are on a number grading system which I know nothing about

I would make the decision of how many to transfer on the day you find out the quality of the embryo. The only unfortunate thing is that multiple births (3+) are definitely more difficult, rarely go full term and you risk a lot of complications. (not saying that will a singelton you wouldnt but the chances are greater)

We have a male fertility issue. This 3rd IVF Cycle we did PICSI and ICSI. This process HUGELY increased our chances of success. We made the most embryos we ever had (13) and resulted in 6 blasts. THey were good grades as mentioned above and we only transfered 1 and have 5 to freeze. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY TO FREEZE in the last 2 IVF cycles (18 embryos)

I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK AND I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DEMAND TO SPEAK TO THEM PRIOR TO YOUR ER AND TRANSFER...YOU NEED TO MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS AND INSURE YOU HAVE ALL THE FACTS FROM THEM IN ORDER TO MAKE THE BEST POSSIBLE (and healthy) CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
