Toilet that keeps on running + an unhandy DH equals
FRUSTRATION!!!!!
So one of our toilets keeps running. The chain is broken and the lever is rusted. Do I just need to replace those 2 items? Or do I need to replace more parts than that?
Please help. If I don't take care of this, I'll have to keep putting my hand in the tank...

Is the flapper part still in one piece? If so, thats all you should have to fix.
If it makes you feel any better, at least its clean water in the upper tank.

I did that at the old place and it worked fine.

I would start with the lever and chain. That is very easy, and cheap. After that, if it still runs, you can also look at the float inside. Sometimes that needs to be adjusted slightly, so the water stops filling before it gets to the overflow tube. Otherwise, it will never turn off. Depending on the float, you either bend the arm a bit, or adjust the screw.

I did this just a few weeks ago. Went to Lowes, got the lever and chain part and installed.
The biggest PIA was getting the old one off..I had to borrow a big wrench from my neighbor. That sucker was on tight! The washer around the nut was stripped, so I hope that's not the case with yours.

DH fixed our toilet last year and he's not handy at all! It's very easy. Home Depot sells a kit with the lever and chain. Just use the parts you need and they have instructions on the box. Good luck!
