Toddlers who start to "hide" when making poop...
Anyone's toddler starting to do this?
Does this mean potty training is around the corner?

Yup. Have him hide while he sits on the potty.
I would scoop them up & move them to the potty. You can recognize that he needs privacy & ask if mommy should stay or go.
Later on it can become a huge issue. At my daughter's 4th birthday party, this little boy kept crying for his mom to go home so he could go in his closet. When I offered a closet for him to play with, she volunteered that he will only "go" in their closet at home. The poor little 4 year old holds it in everywhere he goes until he gets to his own closet.

Yep, once I knew they were "hiding" to poop, we grabbed them and put them on the potty. Pretty soon it became even more predicable. Because it's usually only a 1x or 2x a day thing (well, unless your my DD), the pooping was much easier to train for us. I was always armed with Hershey kisses or some other candy reward and it was smooth sailing after that!

Not my DC, but my DH used to do this. According to MIL he trained pretty shortly after.

I would definitely use that as a good sign when you start to potty train. It doesn't mean you have to start now, but at least he's aware of when he's going.

Both of my boys do this, even Christopher....he will go in the corner and squat. He also does this when we are outside, he will go behind a tree and hide and squat and I know he is doing poop. Matthew just tells me he did poo poo, I HAVE to start him on potty training.

So, can I just lead him to the bathroom and have him "hide" there without putting him on the potty?

Re: Toddlers who start to "hide" when making poop...
I just noticed my DS doing this. My older kids never did it but I remember my nephew hiding too. My DS will go in the corner or under a table and sure enough - there's a present waiting for me in the diaper. I am going to start putting him on the potty when I can catch him doing it. He's almost 27 months.

My nephew use to do this. Even when he was pee trained for awhile and wore underwear all day. He would not poop and then when he got a pull up on for bedtime, he would go in his closet and poop (in the pull up) and come out to be changed. He eventually got it together and fully trained...the poor kid though, I felt bad for him having such emotional turmoil but it's a very personal thing for them, some kids really have some issues with it.

josh kind of always hid in the corner so several months ago i got him a potty seat and when i feel like i caught him in the beginning (don't wanna catch them mid-poop) i just sit him on the potty. he seems to like it and thinks it's a treat.
