Toddlers and Respitory issues
My ds is 2.1 yrs old. He started daycare 2 days a week and has been sick ever since. Only once when he was 3 months old did he have a really nasty cold that caused him to be uncomfortable enough to need the nebulizer.
Twice now since he started daycare he has been sick enough that he has labored breathing and such a nasty nasty cough that he is unable to sleep.
We are heading back to the dr today. It means another day off of work (although my boss understands, she really doesn't, you know how that is)
As someone who struggles with asthma myself, this was not the life I wanted for my son. However, I am convinced that he has an infection that isn't clearing up and the dr. won't rx an antibiotic. My feeling is that an antibiotic might knock out whatever is there and that maybe this kid has a chance at feeling better sooner rather then just waiting it out.
I just feel so sorry for him and his little body that just writhes when he coughs. Add to that the fact that we haven't really slept in three days.
Any advice? TIA

Re: Toddlers and Respitory issues
Unfortunately it's par for the course with many children when they start daycare. For the first year in daycare Alex ALWAYS developed wheezing in her lungs after a cold - I can't even tell you the number of times we had to nebulize her that first year. But after that year, her immunity system got SO strong, and we haven't had to nebulize her since. In fact, she hasn't missed a day of school due to illness in over 2 years

Thanks Beth....did the drs ever rec antibiotics? Part of me thinks that he has some bacteria that just isn't going away. The neb helps the wheezing but doesn't help the cause. I just don't know.....
We have another dr appt today and ds finally fell asleep..........

No, she never developed any kind of infection - she just had a particular weakness in her lungs, so that everytime she got a cold, eventually it would travel to her lungs and she would start wheezing. It was ALWAYS worse during cold months. It was all triggered by a horrible bout with RSV when she was about 6 months old. After about the third or fourth time, they diagonsed her with "pre-asthmatic symptoms" and kept a close watch on her, but eventually she really did just grow out of it. It really took about 2 years for her lungs to strengthen up so that they weren't susceptible to every illness. I have a friend at work who had the same experience with her baby. The doc told her that some kids just have certain weaknesses - some with their lungs, others with recurrent ear infections, etc.

Same here. Generally if DS gets a runny nose, within 2 days I need the nebulizer. But he has only had 1 ear infection in his 2 years. And has only been on antibiotics 2x.
My advice would be talk to your Dr about this but this is what we do 1- First sign of a cold/cough I break out the nebulizer. Ped said that Albuterol is now his cough medicine. 2- Ask about preventive meds...DS got his first cold at 9 months wound up on the neb. Over the next 7-8 months it happened 4 more times. Now during the high cold season the ped put him on Pulmicourt which he takes daily by neb. It is a steroid but has less side effects than the oral meds he would wind up on when he had a bad attack.
Honestly some kids just have this weakness as Beth said. DS is not in daycare and never has been but he does have cousins and I joke with my SIL that if you look at our dr visits is always 2 weeks apart because DS and his 1 cousin (in particular) are like twins and they constantly hold hands, kiss, share toys/food etc, so they are constantly sharing germs and both have this lung weakness at this point!
just keep your fingers crossed that as beth said they grow out of it!

Exact same situtation I have with my DS that Kelly has...he didn't start daycare until almost 7 months old but has had his nebulizer since he was 7 weeks old. he is on a daily steroid and oral for increased exacerbation. He seems to be doing better the past few months...
